Description

N. M. LADD.
STOVE MAT.
APPLICATION FILED APR. I2, I916.
Patented Aug. 1, 1916.
INVENTOH WITNESSES ATTORNEY me N ' NETTIE M. LADD, OF LEESBURG, OHIO.
STOVE-MAT.
Application filed April 12, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NETTIE M. LADD, citizen of the United States, residing at Leesburg, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Mats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stove mats and is designed to be used in connection with gas, gasolene, or oil stoves to place over the burners of such stoves.particularly such as have large and spreading burners for the purpose of reducing the area of the fiame when small utensils are to be heated that would be endangered. in whole or in part by the flames mounting the sides of said utensils and melting, burning, or otherwise injuring portions thereof.
With this object in view, the invention consists of a sheet of iron and a sheet of asbestos connected together and having a central opening for the passage of a flame from a gas, gasolene, or oil stove, the exterior of a utensil placed upon said article being protected from the flame by the surrounding surface of the mat.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a stove mat made of sheet metal such as iron and a fire resisting material particularly asbestos and connect these two sheets in such a manner as to prevent separation thereof and so form them that while serving to protect small utensils and other vessels from becoming overheated and dam' aged, will permit the contents of said utensils to be thoroughly heated and receive the full intensity of the heat or as much thereof is necessary to cook or boil that which they may contain.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of one form of the mat. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the same on the line 22 enlarged. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 33.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 10 indicates an annular plate of sheet metal such as iron having a central opening 11 thercthrough which may be of any desired size and shape, but preferably circular, as shown. Projecting inwardly from the edge of the opening 11 are a plurality of fingers 12 which are preferably pointed as shown, and spaced apart a short distance. Near Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, M16.
Serial No. 90,695.
the outer edge of the plate 10 is a circular row of openings 13, these also are of triangular form and are formed by cutting or punching said metal on two sides thereof and pushing the resulting tongue 1% downwardly. These openings 13 which as before stated are triangular have their bases par allel with the periphery of the plate and their apices pointed toward the opening 11. The fingers it will therefore have their pointed ends pointed in the same way.
Against the under side of the plate 10 between the fingers 12 and 14, is placed an annular sheet of asbestos or an equivalent material 15, the edges of which coincide respectively with the bases of the openings 13 and the boundary edge of the opening 11. Over the edges of the asbestos thus placed, the fingers 12 and 14 are folded as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and pressed closely in place. These fingers form a strong, secure, and safe fastening for the asbestos, which latter may be subjected to an unusual amount of rough usage without hurting or injuring the mat. The outer edge 16 of the plate 10 is rolled or folded under as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 to stiffen and strengthen the mat and to make the same more secure and less dangerous to those handling the same.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A stove mat comprising an annular sheet of thin metal, a like sheet of fire resisting material superposed against the same,
a circular row of fingers on the inner edge of the metal adapted to engage the inner edge of the fire resisting sheet, and a similar row of fingers near the outer edge of the metal sheet to clamp the outer edge of said fire resisting sheet.
2. A stove mat comprising an annular sheet of metal having a row of fingers projecting radially from its inner edge, a like row of fingers within the outer edge out from said sheet and bent downwardly, and an annular sheet of fire resisting material superposed against one side of the metal sheet and secured in place by folding said fingers over the edges of said fire resisting sheet.
3. A stove mat comprising an annular sheet of thin metal having a row of pointed fingers projecting radially from its inner secured in place by folding said fingers over edge and an inwardly turned bead on its the edge of the asbestos sheet. 10 outer edge, a circular roW of fingers Within In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature said beaded edge out from said sheet and in presence of two Witnesses.
bent downwardly, and an annular sheet of NETTIE M. LADD. asbestos superposed against one side of the Witnesses:
metal sheet and fitted between its inner cir- I. E. DAvIs cular edge and the outer row of fingers and L. E. HUFF.
