Be it known that I, VALEN'riNo DE Vroem, a subject of the King of Italy, residingvat Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a s ecification. l

This invention re ates to certain new and useful improvements in pen holders.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a pen retaining device for a holder whereby the writing pen is readily secured to and released from the holder.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a writing instrument of substantially the usual form of pen holder, the same being adapted for receiving the writing en c amped therein, the same being readily released and removed without being grasped by the operator no matter what condition the pen may be in, thus preventing a soiling of the fingers as well as insuring the removal of the pen without breaking the same in such cases for instance, as where the pen is slightly corroded.

The invention therefore contemplates the provision of a handle or holder having a pivoted clamping lever for removably securing a pen in its operative position therein.

Vith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, and then claimed.

It will bo first un erstood that the present device is designed for roniovab soeurng a pen of the usual pointed cons ruotion suoli ne illustrated et 10 within an axial ond chamber 11 of any form of holder or handle such asthe tapered pen holder 12 herein shown.- A split sleeve 13 is snugly fitted Within the chamber 11 vbeing provided with parallel inturned flanges 111 adjacent its side slot 15 and a clamping or locking lever 16' is pivoted between the flanges 11i by means of a transversely arranged pin 16" projecting through said flanges and lever as well as through opposite perforations 17 in the sides of tie sleeve 13.

The lever 16 is substantially segmental in form having its straight edge 18 lying non mally flush with the adjacent side of the holder 12 when the pen 10 is in its secured position, it being understood that the pivoted movements of the lever 16 are permit ted b the arrangement of a longitudinal side s ot 19 in the holder 12 which communicates with the chamber 11 thereof. The curved ed e 20 of the lever 12 is provided with a su stantially semi-circular cam 21 adapted for engaging the inner face of the 'penlO and clamping the same against the opposite inner surface'of the sleeve 13 when the lever is in its substantially longitudinal relation with respect to the handle 12 und with the lever edge 18 in alinement with the adjacent outer surface of tho said handle. The forward end of the lever 16 projects outwardly of the open end of the chamber 11 and constitutes a pointed re leasing arm 22 whereby the lever may be swung upon its pivot pin 16 for releasing the pen 10 from its clamped engagement by thecam 21.

A ferrule 23 is secured encircling the forward ond of the holder 12 being secured thereto by means of a circumferential inwardly-extending bead 24, an inwardly-extending forward flange 25 being arranged upon the ferrule 23 for abutting the forward end of the holder 12 as well as the adjacent end of the sleeve 13, it being noted that the lever 16 is provided with a notch or eut-away portion 26 to accommodate the :ferrulc 28 et the rear side of the handle 12 lying substan tially opposite the pen 10 when positioned in the holder.

When desired to remgve tho pen 10 from the holder 12,thereleas1ng arm 22 is ressed inwardly until the lever 1G assumes its dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 2 and at which time the pen 10 will he entirelyreleased from the cam 21 and the en magY be then readily removed from the iolder y either shaking the holder or dislodging the pen by engaging the same with any convenient ob ect, it being noted that it is not necessary or the operator to gra the pen to remove the same unless so desire While the slot 19 accommodates the lever 16 extending through the side wall of the chamber 11, it w' 1 be seen that a ortion of the holder 12 at the rear of the c amber is also slotted, providing a form of seat 27 for receiving the pointed free end of the lever 1G when in its operative position.

'While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is-believed to he the preferred embodiment thereof, itis nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

1. A holder for a writing pen com rising a holding member having an axia open ended bore at one end thereof and a side slot communicating with the said bore and extending inwardly at one side of the holder forming a receiving seat, a split sleeve positioned within the said chamber having in- `tixrnediparallel` flanges, a segmental lever pivoted to thesaid sleeve shiftably arranged etween the said flanges and through the lsaid ,slot and having the inner curved end ositioned upon the said seat when the lever is in its closed arrangement, the said lever beingv further provided with an engaging cam'for the said pen and with a forwardly projecting pointed releasing arm whereby the pen is released from the holder when tho inner end of the lever is positioned outwardly of the said slot and seat.

2. 'A holder for a writing pen com rising aholding member having an axia open ended bore at one end thereof and a side slot communicating with the said bore and extending inwardly at one side of the holder forming a receiving seat, a split sleeve positioned within the said chamber having 1nturned parallel flanges, a segmental lever pivoted to the said sleeve shiftably arranged etween the said fianges and through the said slot and having the inner curved end ositioned upon the said seat when the lever 1s in its closed arran ement the said lever being further rovi ed with an engaging cam for the sai pen and with a forwardly project-ing pointed releasing arm whereby the pen is released from the holder when the inner end of the lever is positioned outwardly of the said slot and seat and a securing ferrule upon the forwar end of the said holder overlyin the adjacent end of the said sleeve, the said lever having a notch in its outer side at a point adjacent the said ferrule.
