IMPROVEMENT IN WARDROBES AND BEDSTEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,268, dated September 26, 1871.

To all whom 'it may concern.-

Be it known that we, OLIVER L. GARDNER and WILLIAM GARDNER, of Glen Gardner, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Wardrobe and Bedstead; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof,reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my combined Wardrobe and bedstead. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a view of the same, partly in section and partly in elevation, exhibiting the bedstead in an extended position, or in the position it occupies when ready for use.

This invention has reference to an improved combined Wardrobe and bedsteadyand it consists of a case or other suitable receptacle in which clothes and other articles for use may be deposited, so combined and arranged with a bed l stead as that the latter shall form a part or the back of the said case; and also when the same is extended or placed in a horizontal position, the said case is made to constitute a part or the footboard thereof all constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

A in the annexed drawing refers to a case or other suitable receptacle in which clothes and other articles for use may be deposited, and for which purpose the said case is provided with the usual clothes-rack or pins a, and a receptacle or apartment, al, supplied with a hinged lid or cover, a?, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Ac-4 cess is had to the case A through the doors a3, only one of which is partly shown. B B refer to the side and end rails of the bedstead, which are connected together in such a manner that they may be readily taken apart without the removal of nails, screws, or other fastenings ordinarily used for securing the parts of the stead together, as the said end rails are simply reduced and let into mortises cut in the said longitudinal or side rails, and held together in the manner hereinafter described. The side rails `B B are hinged at their lower ends within recesses out in the rear part of the case A, and made to fit at their opposite or upper ends within correspending recesses cut in the upper partof the said case, and rest against ahorizontal partition or the rack-board b in such a manner as that 'the entire bedstead, saving the legs thereof, shall t Sllgugly and compactly within said case and flush Wlth its rear edges, as plainly shown in Fig. 1, whereby the said bedstead and its iexible bot- OIII, or the means employed in holding its parts JGOgether, are made to constitute or form the back of the said case or wardrobe, and whereby economy of room when the bedstead is not in use is secured. C refers to the flexible bed-bottom, having its edges looped in such a manner as to receive the side and end rails B Bl of the bedstead, and so as to permit of their being withdrawn therefrom whenever occasion may require. This bottom B, which is supplied with straps and buckles b1 b1 b2 b2 for fastening it to the side and end rails of the bedstead, holds the said parts firmly together when thus fastened, as well as performs the office of the name it bears. E refers to the head-board of the bedstead, and the hinged lid or board a2 of the case A, when thrown up in a vertical position, acts as a footboard therefor, as plainly shown in Fig. 3, the said foot-board being held in such position by means of a pin or projection, d, and an arm or lever, d. (See Figs. 1 and 3.) E refers to legs hinged to and supporting the outer end of the bedstead, while the inner end thereof is supported by means of the case A in the manner shown in Fig. 3. A button, e, on the case A holds the bedstead thereto when elevated, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

The case or wardrobe A, supplied with the hinged lid a2, projection d, and arm or lever d', in combination with the bedstead B B and the bottom C, arranged and operating substantially Vas and for the purpose described.
