Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS H. SCI-IAPPELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schuylkill Haven, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rolling-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in rolling pins, involving a construction whereby the rolling pin is arranged to provide a plurality of distinctive utensils.
The improved rolling pin is made up of a plurality of parts adapted when assembled to provide a rolling pin of ordinary shape and when separated to have independent uses, such as scoops, or the like, the parts of the rolling pin being also arranged to accommodate and house a series of independent culinary articles, any one of which is readily accessible for use as required, whereby the completed article combines in effect a plurality of articles.
The invention further consists in an improved locking means for the locking of the sections in assembled position and preventing the displacement of the kitchen utensils therefrom.
The invention consists in the novel features, details of construction, and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the ap pended claim.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the rolling pin in assembled position; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the core of the rolling pin; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the side boxes, looking down on the top thereof; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the side boxes clearly illustrating the construction of the bottom thereof; Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 5 designates a rolling pin, which in this particular instance, constitutes a pair of telescopic parts including a rolling pin body 6 and a core 7. The rolling pin body 6 comprises a hollow cylindrical metallic casing 8 closed at one end through the medium of a solid wooden disk 9 having attached thereto a handle 10. An eyelet 10 is carried by the handle whereby when the rolling pin is not used may be suspended from a support and having an opening 18, co-extending through its width and opening out through the open end 14 of the core. The opposite end of the hollow core? is closed by means of a solid disk 15 provided with a handle 16.
It will be clearly understood that inasmuch as the rolling pin body portion 6 and the core portion 7 are hollow, both may be utilized as scoops, but preferably the core portion 7, when the portions are disassembled. When the said portions are telescoped or in closed position, that is to say, when the core 7 is placed within the rolling pin body 6, the core is utilized as a support for containers, such as is clearly illustrated. These containers being'indicated generally by 18, a particular form of spice box being contemplated, which spice boxes are better illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing. The spice boxes 18, for the purpose of illustration, are shown as provided with a closure 19, of the sifting type of closure, whereby movement of the lug 20 in the slot 21, in one direction, will open the apertures 22 of the closure, and permit falling of the spices therefrom, whereas the movement of the said lugs in the opposite direction in the slot 21, causes the apertures to be closed and prevents the contents from becoming accidentally displaced from the spice can. These spice cans or boxes are further utilized as cake cutters, by forming the bottoms 23 with cake molds or cutters 24. It is, of course, to be understood that the design of cutters shown is only for the purpose of illustration, and any other design or configuration of cutter may be substituted therefor when desired.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1 of the drawing it will be noted that the cores 17, being of a lesser diameter than the rolling pin body portion 6, provides within the rolling pin body portion, between the opposed surfaces of the core portion 7 and the body portion 6, a compartment 25. This compartment 25 is utilized as a container for a kitchen tool kit 26. This kit 26 is formed of any suitable flexible material, in the nature of canvas, leather and the like, and is provided with a series of pockets 27, which permits of the kitchen tools 28, being attached thereto, whereby the tools are properly applied to the kit, and said kit is placed around the core 7, previous to the insertion of the latter within the rolling pin body portion 6; In' order to prevent the displaccment of the core from the rolling pin body, and guard against the spice boxes, yeast powder boxes 17 and the tool kit from becoming removed therefrom, I provide the solid disk 15 with a concentric annular groove 29, formed in the peripheral edge of said head, and said groove being provided with a series of angular entrance slots 81, for permitting the keeper ll oto enter the groove 29, and upon a partial rotation of the head, 15, throws the keeper 11 out of alinement with the slots 31, and causes the core 7 to be locked or retained within the rolling pin body 6.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates. While I have described the principles of operation of the device together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such advantages may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended thereto.
WVhat is claimed as new is A device of the class described comprising a pair of telescoping sections of co-extensive lengths including a cylindrical body portion and a core portion, each of said portions being formed with a closed end and an open end, ahandle attached to the closed ends of said telescopic sections, the closed end of the core having formed on its peripheral edge a series of spaced grooves, the open end of the body portion being provided with a series of inwardly extending spaced keepers, the inwardly extending spaced keepers of the body portion adapted to interlock in the concentric gro-oves'upon the engagement of the open end of the core with the closed end of the body portion, thereby holding the closed end of the core within the open end of the body portion and serving to close the latter, thus preventing any accidental longitudinal movement of the core with respect to said body.
