GEORGE F. SISBOWER, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, AND LOUIS E. PITTONI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TONEW YORK COUCH BED COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, Y.,
A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
WIRE MATTRESS.
Application filed January 16, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. SISBOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, and LOUIS E. PrrToNI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York city, county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Mattresses, the following being a full, clear, and exact disclosure of the one form of our invention which we at present deem preferable.
For a detailed description of the present form of our invention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof.
Our invention relates to wire mattresses and consists in means for supporting and stretching the edges of the wire fabric composing the longitudinal portion of the mat tress.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the wire fabric of the mattress which, in the usual way, is stretched under tension between the end bars B, B of the frame. T o the end of each bar B we attach an upright cross piece E projecting both above and below the bar. To the top ends of the cross pieces E we connect a cable C, one or both ends being adjustable in tension by a nut F.
The cable 0 is two or three inches above the' level of fabric A but is connected at G, G to the edge of the fabric while a similar cable D is extended between the lower ends of the cross-pieces E, E and is in the same way connected with the edge of the wire fabric A. While the cable C tends to draw up and support the edge of the wire fabric, the cable D tends to draw down and depress it. By means of the two cables the level of the fab ric may be kept at any desired points while the longitudinal stress on the upper cable is balanced by that of the lower one. The two cables also unite to prevent lateral spreading of the mattress without impairing its resiliency to downward pressure.
lVhat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a wire mattress,
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 2,601.
of uprights positioned on both sides of the mattress and attached thereto at its ends, cables positioned above the respective side edges of said mattress and connecting said uprights in pairs, means connecting said cables to the contiguous edges of said mattress, and tensioning means connecting the uprights of each pair below the plane of the mattress.
2. The combination with a wire mattress, of uprights positioned on both sides of the mattress and attached thereto at its ends, cables positioned above the respective side edges of said mattress and connecting said uprights in pairs, and tensioning cables positioned below the mattress and also connect ing said uprights, and means for connecting the contiguous edges of said mattress to said cables.
3. The combination with a wire mattress, of uprights positioned on both sides of the mattress and attached thereto at its ends, cables positioned above the respective side edges of said mattress and connecting said uprights in pairs, means connecting said cables to the contiguous edges of said mattress, tensioning means connecting the uprights of each pair below the plane of the mattress, and means for varying the tension upon said cables and said tensioning means.
f. The combination with a wire mattress, of uprights positioned on both sides of the mattress and attached thereto at its ends, cables positioned above the respective side edges of said mattress and connecting said uprights in pairs, tensioning cables positioned below the mattress and also connecting said uprights, and devices connecting said cables and also attached to the mattress intermediate the ends thereof.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands, before two subscribing witnesses, this li-th day of January, 1915.
GEORGE r. SISBOWER. LOUIS n. PITTONI.
