Description

UNITED STATES EDWARD wALooTT, 0E NATIOK, MASsAoHUSETTs.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,207, dated'September 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, EDWARD WALcoTT, of Natick, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to boots or shoes in which the upper is composed of one main piece and a small auxiliary side piece to complete the body of the upper; .and it consists in the formation of this side piece so that it shall, at the same time, be a lapel to cover or extend over the slit in the front of the shoe or boot. The invention is applicable to plow-boots, balmorals, and all bootees. The advantages attending it are that the shoe may be made of less pieces, dispensing with the inside flap usually found in laced shoes; it requires less stitching, is neater in appearance,
and can be more easily adjusted to the foot or ankle.
In the accompanying drawing in illustration of my invention, and the manner in which it is or, may be carried into efiect, I have represented the mode of applying it to what is known as a plow-boot.
Figure 1 represents the main piece of the upper. Fig. 2 represents the side piece which forms at once a part of the upper and a lapel for the front slit. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the completed boot.
A indicates the main piece of which the upper is composed. This piece requires no particular description further than that it is cut from a piece of leather in such manner as to form the whole of the upper, excepting the top part of the quarter "on one side of the shoe. The shape shown in the drawing is that employed to make r a common plow-boot, the slit along the line a representing what is usually the lacingslit. B represents the auxiliary side piece needed to complete the upper. This piece, like the ordinary side piece, is shaped to complete the upper and to fill the space left on one side of the main piece, thus forming the top of the quarter on one side of the shoe and completing the upper. But, in addition, its front portion is extended so that when applied to the piece A it will form a lapel to cover or extend over the slit a. In the drawing the extended portion of the side piece is represented as included between the dotted ine b and the front edge of the piece, the dotte line being the limit of the ordinary side piece.
In making the shoe the side piece is sewn to the exterior of the main'piece A, as indicated in Fig. 3, so that the lower edge of its extended portion may lap over and be sewed down upon the other side of the uppernear the bottom of the slit; in this respect differing from the usual mode of fastening the ordinary side piece by sewing it to the inside of the main piece.
The shoe when on the foot is fastened by a strapand buckle or other suitable means, as indicated in Fig. 3, which serve to adjust the side piece to the ankle and to draw and hold down the lapel over the slit in the front of the shoe. Having now described my invention and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A boot or shoe the upper of which is composed of a main piece and a side piece which form the top of the quarter on one side of the shoe, and is extended so as to cover and form a lapel for the slit in the front of the same, substantially as herein shown and: described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD WALCOTT.
