I that class of apparatus which is designed to be attached to the discharge nozzle of an ordinary water supply faucet, without in any way interfering with, or in any manner altering or disturbing the supply pipe system.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple and efficient shower bathapparatus, which may be easily and readily attached and detached to and from a supply faucet, and that shall be convenient to operate.
Other objects are to produce a device which will be neat in appearance, cheap to construct, and that can be readily folded into a compact form for transportation from place to place.
Another object of my invention is to produce an apparatus that can be utilized by simply attaching it to an ordinary water faucet, and to so control and direct the spray that it will thoroughly spray the body of the user without wetting the hair or splat-tering the water outside of the receptacle within which the operator is standing, and at the same time dispense with the curtain usually employed'for this latter purpose.
WVith the above recited objects in view, I will proceed to describe one of the many forms which my invention may assume, and which at the present time I elect as my preferred form, but I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form shown, but desire the liberty to make such alterations and changes in construction vas may suggest, themselves from time to time, and which fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Figure 1, isa side elevation of my device complete, and is shown attached to an ordinary faucet, the dotted lines illustrating the manner in which the yoke is maintained in a horizontal position, and the mechanism by which it is accomplished. Fig. 2, is a detached view showing the bottom of the yoke, regulating cock and hinge-joint pipe fitting, and connecting rod. Fig. 3, is a detached View of the attaching device, looking at the front thereof, and showing the clamping member, staple, and clamping nuts, all in elevation. Fig. 4, is an edge view of one of the lever members, which in conjunction with the connecting rod shown in Figs. 1,
and 2, constitutes the paralleling mechanism for the yoke. Fig. 5, is a view in longitudinal. section of the hinge-joint pipe fitting,
which connects the two tubular members of the apparatus. Fig. 6, is a like view of the hinge-joint and regulating cock combination pipe fitting, which serves as a connection between the second tubular member and the spraying yoke. Fig. 7 is the clamping member, which in conjunction with the clamping nuts and staple, illustrated in Figs. 1, and 3, constitutes the clamping mechanism for attaching and holding the apparatus in proper position upon the faucet. Fig. 8, is a longitudinal section of the three-way cock employed upon the attaching end of the apparatus, and illustrates the manner in which the device is centered upon the discharge end of the supply pipe, by reason of the funnelshaped intake.
Similar characters denote like parts throughout the several views.
1, is an ordinary water supply faucet, provided with the usual operating lever, but as it forms no part of this invention, it is merely shown to illustrate the manner of attaching the apparatus, and further description is thought to be unnecessary.
2, is an ordinary three-way cock, provided with the funnel-shaped intake 3, and having a flexible seat 4?." A hook-like projectionfi, extends rearwardly from the upper edge of the cock 2, and is utilized in conjunction with the staple 6, and the clamping member 7 to secure the apparatus in position upon the faucet 1. The three-way cock 2, is further provided with a downwardly projecting discharge nozzle 8, and an upwardly projecting discharge nozzle 9, and a stop-plug 10, provided with the actuating lever 11, for I three-way cock, is internally threaded as at 18, and a tubular member 19, is threaded externally for a considerable distance upwardly from the end thereof, as at 20, and carries a nut 21, in threaded engagement therewith, and normally located near the upper extremity of the threaded-section, the purpose of which will be more fully hereinafter explained. The threaded portion 20, of the tubular member 19, engages the internally threaded portion 18, of the discharge nozzle 9, to produce a water tightjoint.
The staple 6, is screw-threaded upon the ends 22, and 23, and carries nuts 24, and 25, in threaded engagement thereon. A clamping member 7, is provided with slots 26, and 27, and the perforations 28, and 29, arranged to accommodate the passage of the ends 22, and 23, of the staple 6. 26 of the said clamping member 7, is countersunk at 30, for the reception of the nut 21, for a purpose which will be ex-' plained later on.
A hinge-joint pipe fitting, 31, is screwthreaded upon the upper end of the tubular member 19, and bears in screw-threaded connection with its outer end, a second tubular member 32, and a combined straight-way cock, and hinge-joint pipe fitting 33, is mounted in screw-threaded engagement upon the outer end of the second tubular member 32.
A perforated yoke 34, is'secured to the outer end of the combined cock and hingejoint 33, and all of the hereinbefore recited members are in circulatory connection with each other, as can be readily seen by reference to the sectional views 5, 6, and 8, of the drawings.
The hinge-joints 31, and 33, are each pro-- vided with a binding screw 35, of the thumbturn variety, for the purpose of clamping the said hinge-joints in any desired positions. The hinge-joints hereinbefore referred to being a commercial article, no claim is made of their detailed construction, and further reference thereto is thought to be unnecessary.
The straight-way cock of the combination fitting 33, is provided with the usual stop-plug 37, and handle 38, and is utilized to regulate the flow of water through the per forations 39, of the yoke 34.
VVasher-like members 40, and 41, having the off-set depending arms 42, and 43, respectively, are each provided with an inwardly projecting lug 44, adapted to be pressed into the metal sides of the hingejoints 31, and 33. and anchored thereto in predetermined positions, by the clamping action of the bindingscrews 35, upon which they are mounted, as shown in Fig. 1. The depending arm 40, is mounted upon that portion of the hinge joint fitting 31, which The slot respectively for the reception of the connecting rod 47. r
The connectlng rod 47, is formed of a single piece of wire, and one end of the said wire is bent into a Z-shape 48, and the other end of said wire is bent into an L-shape 49, both of the sald bends occupying approximately the same plane. The connecting rod 47, thus formed, has the first section of the Z-shaped end, passed through the perforation 45, the main portion of the rod 47, is next sprung around until the L-shaped end will enter the perforation 46, of the depending arm 43, where it will be retained by reason of the tension produced by springingthe rod 47, over in order that the IL shaped end may enter the said perforation 46.
The operation of the last described de vice will be readily understood by reference to the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The lever arm 40, being anchored to an immovable portion of the apparatus, and the lever arm 41, be ing anchored to a movable member, and the two lever arms being connected by the con necting rod 47 it will be obvious that any movement of the yoke in a vertical direction, will act through the intervention of the lever 40, and 41, and the connecting rod 47, to hold the yoke 34, at all times in a horizontal position.
To attach the apparatus to a water supply, the funnel-shaped intake 3, is placed upon the discharge nozzle of a faucet with the hook-like projection 5, extending to the rear, and the clamping member 7, placed in position upon the top of the faucet 1, as shown in Fig. 1, and the nut 21, upon the tubular member 19, screwed into the countersink 30, the staple 6, engaged with the hook-like projection, 5, the threaded ends 22, and 23, passed up through the perforations 28, and 29, of the clamping member 7, and the nuts 24 and 25, screwed upon their respective staple ends and down against the clamping member 7 when by adjusting the nuts 21, 24, and 25, the clamping member 7, can be brought to an approximately horizontal position and by continued tightening of the several nuts, the funnel-shaped intake 3, of the three-way cock 2, will be drawn up snugly against the nozzle of the faucet 1, and held firmly and rigidly in the proper position. 7
To operate the apparatus the three-way cock is set so that the downwardly project ing discharge nozzle 8, is closed and the intake and upwardly projecting discharge passages register and the straightway cock in the fitting 33, closed. The water is now turned into the apparatus, the user steps into position, draws the yoke down over the head, when by manipulating the straight way cock, in the fitting 33, the flow of water may be regulated to suit the individual taste of the user. The perforations 39, in the yoke 34:, are so placed that the discharge therefrom'converges to a point central of, and considerably below the center of the yoke 34. It will be seen that by this arrangement the flow of water will be converged against the'body, and by manipulating the straight-way cock, any desired force of discharge may be obtained at will.
When through using the-apparatus, the main faucet 1, is closed, the three-way cock 2, set so that the two discharge passages register and the regulating straight-way cock in the fitting 33, is opened so as to permit of the water standing in the apparatus to drain out through the downwardly projecting discharge 3, which will be readily accomplished by raising the yoke 34,.to as high a point as possible.
When it is desirable to raise the apparatus straight up out of the way, all that is necessary is to disconnect the connecting Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the rod, at the front connection, which can be readily accomplished by pressing it sidewise in the proper direction until it is disengaged from the arm 41.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a shower bath apparatus, a cock provided with a downwardly projecting discharge outlet and an upwardly projecting discharge outlet and a funnel-shaped intake, adapted to receive the discharge nozzle of a water supply faucet, a jointed pipe system consisting of a stationary member and a hinge-jointed vertically swingable member and a perforated yoke member hingejointed to said swingable member, all in circulatory connection with each other, and a regulating cock in said pipe system adjacent to said yoke member, and means for draining the water from said apparatus when not in use, and a pivoted rod connection between said stationary member and said yoke member adapted to maintain said yoke horizontally at all times irrespective of its vertical position and adjustment.
