Be it known that 1, Francis E. CRAw- FORD, a citizen of the United States, resid--- ing at Canon City, in the county of Fremont and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention .relates to devices for protecting the surreptitious opening of a pay station telephone box by unauthorized persons.

In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to construct a simple and eifective means which will co-act with the locking bolt of a coin tray or compartment upon a pay station telephone so that the said compartment cannot be opened even by persons having a key which will fit the look.

For a comprehensive understanding of the'invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the drawings 7 sition, Fig. 3 is a similar view but illustrating the upper unit or member of the box moved to permit of the opening of the coin compartment or the withdrawal of the coin tray, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, thevnumeral 1 designates an ordinary pay station'telephone. As the details of construction of the telephone do not fall within the scope of the present invention, it is not deemed necessary to refer to or to illustrate the particular arrangement of the same, it being merely necessary to set forth that the telephone embodies an upper compartment 2 having chutes through which the coins are inserted and a lower compartment 3 which receives the said coins. If desired the lower compartment may be provided with a slidable door or the same may be provided with a hinged door, in either instance, a lock 3 is provided, the locking bolt 10 being normally forced against a suitable lug or against the upper and outer face of the compartment 2 to prevent the withdrawal of the door ortheopening of the door. The lower compartment has its upper and outer corners provided with lugs 5 through which are passed pivots 6 to secure the upper compartment 2 tothe said lower compartment, and the upper compartment 2 is provided with a suitable lock for sustaining the same against opening. The compartment 3 is provided with an elongated slot 6, and the upper compartment 2 is provided upon its outer face at its central portion with a depending member 7 which passes through the slot 6 in the compartment 3. The member 7 has its end provided with an angular extension forming an angular finger 8, and this hook is adapted to pass through an opening in the bolt 10 of the lock 3 to prevent the withdrawal of the bolt'even when a key is inserted therein. To open'the compartment 3 it will be necessary to operate the lock of the compartment 2, when the said compartment 2 may be swung to the position illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thus bringing the finger 8 out of engagement with the opening 9 in the locking bolt 10 to permit of the operation of the said locking bolt. When the sliding bolt 10 is again moved to its locking position, the section 2 is again swung closed upon the section 3, and the finger 8 again enters the slot or opening 9 in the bolt 10, thus securing the bolt against being tampered with by unauthorized persons.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the V simplicity of the device, as well as the advantage thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: 1. A box comprising upper and lower members having a pivoted connection, a lock for the upper member, a door for the lower member, a lock for the said door, the locking bolt of the said last-mentioned lock having an opening, the pivoted upper member being provided with a book which is adapted to engage with the opening when the members are swung one over and in contact with the other.

2. A box comprising an upper and lower section having a pivotal connection, a lock for the upper section, a movable member in the lower section, a lock for said movable member, the bolt of said lock being proo vicled with an opening and the said bolt when in looking position adapted to contact with the lower section to prevent the sliding of the movable element from the said section, the upper section having an angular finger member passing through an opening in the lower section and adapted to be received in the opening of the bolt 10 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
