Be it known that I, WRIGHT R. CARTLEDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented a new and; useful Abdominal Belt, of which the following is a specification. v

My invention consists of an abdominal belt adapted to be adjusted in depth at its front according to the requirements of the abdomen. To this end, there is added to the belt a movable section or member which may be lowered thereon, and means for holding said section or member in the position to which it is adjusted. i

It consists also in providing the belt with means forming a closure for the opening caused by the ends of the belt at the rear thereof, the same serving also to cover the lacing, etc., of said ends, vand preventing said lacing,. etc., from contactingl directly with thebody of the wearer.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but thev im,- portant instrumentalities thereof may be varied, as long as they are included in the scope of the claims.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an abdominal belt embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top edge view thereof. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of a portion of the front of the belt. Fig. 4 represents an elevation of a portion of the front of the movable section or member of the band.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an abdominal or elastic belt which excepting the features ofs my invention applled thereto is well known in the`art.

2 designates a section or piece of a band ofelastic material which is placed vertically l slidably on the front of the belt 1 and connected at its ends with what may be termed the side of said belt by the lacings 3 and eyelets 4, the straps 5 and buckles 6, there being in the present case a greater number of eyelets on one side of the band 1, than inthe adjacent end of the section 2, and a greater number of buckles on the other side of the belt 1, than of straps on the adjacent end of 'said section, it being evident that said sec-- tion may be let out and taken 'in and lowered on the belt to a greater extent than that shown in Fig. 1, and so increase lthe. depth of `the belt and thereby adjust the front of the latter according to the anatomy of the abdomen and to be properly fitted and tightened thereon with the proper pressure while also .imparting the proper pressure to the relatlve portion of the belt, and'consequently to the abdomen where said belt contacts.

On the belt 1 at the center thereof is the series of tapes or straps 7 arranged horizontally thereon one below the other and so Vsecured thereto that their ends are left free for tying purposes.

On the section 2 at the center thereof is the tape or strap 8 arranged horizontally lthereon and sosecured thereto that the ends are left free for tying purposes. It will now be seen that'when the belt is placed on the abdomenland the section 2 adjusted in depth thereon the tape 8 thereon is tied and bowknotted, or otherwise secured to the proper tape of the series of tapes 7 on the belt 1, whereby the section will be nicely connected with the band and retained in its adjusted position'thereon. `When the section 2 is adjusted to the position shown in Fig.l 1, the

.tapes 8 of the latter are brought to the upper most tapes 7 -of the section 1 and secured thereto. Should said section 2 be lowered, the ta es 8 are secured to the second line of tapes The section 2 may be lowered to greater extent to the third or fourth lines of tapes 7, as the case may be, and either of said lines of tapes 7 may be tied to the tapes 8.

It will be noticed that asthe section 2 is lowered, the tapes 8 follow the same, but the v tapes 7 will be uncovered, hence they present them successively for connection with said tapes 8.

An additional connection for the `section withthe band is provided by the tape or straps 9 on the inner side of the center of said section, the same beingA adapted to be tied to either of the tapes 7 of the belt below the tape 8 of the section.

'lo the backof the belt on one sidev'of the laced-placket opening 10 there is; secured by the stitches 11 one end of the Hap 12 which crosses the opening of the placket and the' lacing and eyelets of the walls thereof so as to form a closure for said opening and a cover for the eyelets and lacing of the placket thus guarding the body of the wearer from contact therewith.

The end of the ap opposite to the stitches 11 is disconnected from the contiguous portion of the belt whereby saidflap may be let out or taken in relatively to the extent of the width of the opening in the adjustment of the placket to the body of the wearer, but in order to hold said disconnected end in adjusted position on the belt, I employ the tape 13 plurality of eyelets 14 on the Hap and a plurality of eyelets 15 on the belt and properly drawn taut and its ends are bow-knotted or otherwise secured as at 16 on the exterior of the belt, whereby they are convenient of access. The eyelets or openings 14 in the Hap and on the belt are separated so that the tape 13 extends flat from one eyelet to the other in each respective part, whereby the flap is held fiat on said portion of the placket in its adjustments.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :e

1. In an abdominal belt,`a vband overlying ing and adjusting the same,

which is reeved through a' the front connecting the ends of said band to said belt whereby a vertical adjustment of said band is provided, and means for holding said band in its adjusted position.

2. An abdominal belt having a placket thereon and means on the latter for securand a flap member adapted to close the opening of said placket, the same being connected at one,

end with a side of said placket, passing said opening and overlapping freely the other side of said placket, and a securing and adjusting tape-like member reeved through said free end of the flap member and the adjacent portion of the belt adjacent to said placket, said free end ofthe flap member and said adjacent portion of the placket of the belt having each therein .a plurality of registering separated eyelets for the passage therethrough of ber, wherebyY said flap is held flat on said adjacent portion of the belt.
