This invention relates to an improved farm gate, and an object of the invention is to provide a single standard on which the gate is pivotally mounted, which stand;- ard is provided with a central gradual twisted part, on which a ratchet fsleeve is rotatably and slidably .mounted, said ratchet sleevebeing mounted in a bearing of the double ended gate and, cooperating with a pawl in such a manner that the ratchet will slip by the pawl when the gate is raised bodily on the standard, and when the gate is allowed to gravitate, the ratchet will be engaged by the pawl, causing the gate to rotate partially with the sleeve, to open or close the gate, the twistedsect ion of the standard in this instance causing the gate to swing. V I Another object of the invention is to provide means for raising the gate bodily on said standard. 7
In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved farm gate constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view in elevation of the means for raising the gate bodily, and the means for causing the gate to rotate partially to anopen or closed position, as the gate lowers by gravitation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring more especially to the draw ings, 1 designates a suitable base plate or the like, which may be anchored in the ground to one side of the roadway by the members 2. Rising upwardly from the base plate 1 is a standard 3 having a tapered part 4: from the base 1' extendlng to the lower part of the twisted section 5 as indicated at 6. Said standard is provided with an upper cylindrical section 7 above the.
twisted sectidn 5. However, the three sections of the standard are axially alined. A sleeve 8 is mounted upon the twisted section, and it will be seen that as the sleeve is moved slidably upwardly on the twisted part, it w1ll rotate owing to the twist, and
when the sleeve is lowered it will rotate in the opposite direction. The central part of the sleeve 8 has an annular integral flange 9. provided with ratchet teeth 10. A gate 11, comprising two sections 12 and 13, is provided. The two gate sections are connected by the upper and lower straps 1 1 and 15, secured to the gate section. as at 16. The upper strap lthas a central cylindrical bearing ring or collar 17 which telescopically fitsthe cylindrical part or section 7 of said standard. The lower strap 15 is provided with a central collar or sleeve 18, the wall of which is tapering and is axially alined with thei; collar 17, and is mounted upon the tapering section 1 of the standard: A pair of additional straps 19 and 20 also connect the adjacent ends of the, gatesection vhich straps 19 and 26 are secured to the gate section as at 21. The upper strap 19 has a central collar 22 into which the upper part of the sleeve ,8 fits. The lower strap 20 has acentral collar 23, which fits the lower end of the sleeve 8.] In this manner the sleeve is swivelly mounted between thetwostraps 19 and 20. Across beam 25 is provided having acentrally arranged'downwardly extending stem loosely and rotatably fitting into the upper end. of
the cylindrical, section 7 of the standard.
Pivoted at 27 to one end of the cross beamis a lever 28 having a cord 29 one end, and a link 30 at the other end, which link 30- is in turn connected to the rods 31,
which are in turn connected at 32 to the gate. The other end 33 of the beam 25 has pivoted to it at 35 a lever 36. A link 37 is pivoted at 38 to the inner end of the lever 36, and is in turn connected'to the rods 39, which are similar to the rods 31. The rods 39 1111111111 are pivotally connected at 40 to the gate sections The. outer end of the lever 36has a rope or cord 41 con nected to it. Y
In-the present case there are shown tworoadways in parallel relation, and adjacent the outer portions of both roadways are gate abutment posts 42 and 43. Arranged between the roadways is a third gate abutment post 44. All of the abutment posts 42, 43 and 44 are angular in cross section and the flange parts 45 (which are radial with relation to the standards) are provided with cutaway portions or recesses 46. Each end of the gate is provided with suitable latch connections 54, which are adapted to engage the abutment posts. A driver of a vehicle (which may be passing along the roadway in the direction of the arrow (0) pulls the rope or cord 41, which will cause the lever 36 to oscillate upon its pivot, and through the link and rod connections 37 and 39 with the gate sections, the gate sections are raised, thereby disengaging the latch plates 54 of both gate sections from their keepers, so that the gate sections may start swinging open. The latch plates will pass through the cutaway portions or recesses 46 of the abutment posts 42 and 43. lVhen the gate is so raised, the sleeve 8 will slide vertically upon the twistedsect-ion 5 of the standard, and at the same time will rotate, in which case the teeth 10 will ratchet by the angular end 60 of the pawl 61 (which is secured at 62 to the gate section 12), and in this case the sleeves 8 will rotate or swivel in the collars 2:2 and 23. The driver of the vehicle then releases the rope or cord 41, in which case the gate is free to gravitate bodily. When the gate gravitates, it will also rotate or swing upon the standard, owing to the pawl 61 (which is carried by one of the gate sections) holding the sleeves fast with the gate, by virtue of the angled end 60 of the pawl engaging the teeth 10 of the flange 9 of the sleeve, and because the sleeve will rotate on the twisted section of the standard. At the same time that the gate reaches its lowermost position after the cord 41 having been released, the end of the gate section 13 will swing so that the latches will hold the gate sections closed. When the gate is in this position, the rope or cord 41 will still be in the path of the driver of the vehicle, but a slight distance beyond the point where it was previously located, owing to the beam 25 moving with the gate. The driver may then pull the cord 21 while it is in this latter position, so as to again raise the gate, in which case, the foregoing operation of the gate will be repeated, so that the gate will be closed behind the team. The same principles of operation are performed when the team or vehicle is approaching the gate moving in the direction of the arrow I) along the other roadway, but in this instance the driver pulls the rope or cord 29, to open and close the gate. The twisted section of the standard has a reduced part 63, which fits into the cylindrical section 7, and is secured by the pin 64. To arrange the sleeve 8 upon the twisted section, it is accomplished prior to connecting the twisted section to the cylindrical section 7.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. In combination, a vertical standard adapted to be positioned between two parallel roadways and having a central twisted or auger section, a pair of gate sections arranged end to end and extending in opposite directions to close both roadways, means connecting the adjacent ends of the gate sections and having cylindrical collars fitting the standard above and below the twisted or auger section, means connecting the central parts of the adjacent ends of the gate sections and having collars, a ratchet operable on the twisted section of the stand ard and being swiveled in the collars of the central connecting means, means to raise the gate sections as one body causing the ratchet sleeve to rotate and move upwardly on the twisted section of the standard, and means to hold the ratchet sleeve fast with the central connecting means, when the raisingmeans are released, causing the gate sections to gravitate and rotate to an open or closed position.
2. In combination, a vertical standard adapted to be positioned between two parallel roadways and having a central twisted or auger section, a pair of gate sections arranged end to end and extending in opposite directions to close both roadways, means connecting the adjacent ends of the gate sections and having cylindrical collars fitting the standard above and below the twisted or auger section, means connecting the central parts of the adjacent ends of the gate sections and having collars, a ratchet sleeve operable on the twisted section of the standard and being swiveled in the collars of the central connecting means, means to raise the gate sections as one body causing the ratchet sleeve to slide and rotate on the twisted section of the standard upwardly, and means to hold the ratchet sleeve fast with the central connecting means, when the raising means are released, causing the gate sections to gravitate and rotate to an open or closed position, and abutment posts for the free ends of the gate sections to limit the gate sections in open and closed positions.
