ALBERT Gr. BURRIS, OF SLOATSBURG, NEW YORK.
CLOTHES-LINE SUPPORTING AND OPERATING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1916.
Application led May 17, 1913. Serial N o. 768,372.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBERT Gr. BURRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sloatsburg, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Sup* porting and Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved clothes line supporting and operating device such as will allow the clothes to be hung upon the line and move to and from the operator according to his desire.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character wherein the clothes line is supported below the operating mechanism, consequently allowing the line and the clothes hung thereon to be rotated without hindrance of any kind.
Another object of my invention is to provide means in the form of a web, having extensions formed thereon, for the purpose of supporting the clothes line, the web being carried upon a cable supported upon a pair of pulleys.
By supporting the clothes line below the operating mechanism, it will be recognized that a diiiiculty heretofore existing in this art has been overcome. In devices of this character now in use clothes that are hung upon the line cannot be moved through the operating mechanism because of its compact nature, and the fact that the clothes line extends to the body portion thereof. In my invention, however, the clothes line is supported below the operating mechanism, consequently allowing considerable space so that the line may be rotated with clothes thereon free of the operating mechanism.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- 4 Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved operating mechanism showing the clothes line and web broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device as shown in Fig.
l. Fig. Sais a transverse sectional view of the operating mechanism. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of the device as shown in Fig. 3.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a suitable support upon which my invention has been disposed, but it is to be appreciated that this support is merely shown illustrating the attachment of the device, and the latter may be used in connection with any other form of support if occasion should require.
A bracket 11 is secured to the support, as shown at 12, the bracket being formed preferably of a sheet material, for instance, metal, so that its longitudinal sides are spaced from one another, as clearly shown. A stud 13 is carried by this bracket, the latter having a head portion 14 provided thereon, which head portion is disposed between the longitudinal sides of the bracket and prevents the removal of the stud. Further; an enlargement l5 is provided upon the forward end of the stud, the upper end of the enlargement being formed into a plate 16. The plate is now formed into a strip 17, this serving the purpose that will be hereinafter fully set forth and described. While this form of bracket has been illustrated for the purpose of supporting the elements shown in the drawings, it is to be appreciated that I am not limited to this specic use, and that other forms of brackets may be provided if it is desired.
A plate 18 is provided, which has its under sides provided with a cut-out portion 19, as is clearly shown. Another plate 20 is disposed beneath the first plate 18, the second plate also having a cut-out portion 21 provided therein which registers with the cut-out portion 19 in the first plate, consequently providing an opening, as is clearly shown. A U-shaped cut out portion 33 is provided in the plate 20 within which is disposed the facing plate 34. This facing plate 34 is rigidly secured within said cut out portion 33 through the medium of the bolt 22; said bolt 22 is constructed so as to provide the bearing for the pulley 24 and to hold the facing plate 18 securely in position. The plates are secured upon the strip 17 through the medium bolts and nuts 32, so that they are in rigid relation to each other. TWithin the cut-out portions 19 and 2l and upon the bolt 22 is supported a pulley Qll, this pulley being spaced from the base of the cut-out portions through the medium of bearings 25 and carrying an annular oil-set portion 2G at the lower edge ot' its periphery, as is clearly shown.
It Will be appreciated that there are supn ports which support two operating devices7 one at each end of the line so that either may be manipulated if it is desired. l have only shown one operating` device in the drawing, however, but as they are both the same7 a second View Will be superliuous.
A cable 27 operates about the pulley 24, and is supported upon the annular orf-set portion 26 thereof. A Web 28 is carried upon the cable 27 from Which Web depend extensions 29, these being rolled at their loiver ends for supporting the clothes line 80, as is shown. rhe web and its extensions operate Within the semi-circular slot 3l which is provided between the member and the facing 34e. It will new be recognized that the clothes line is supported beneath the operating. member whereby when the clothes are held thereon its operation is not hindered While the saine is being moved into dillerent positions.
lt is thought from the foregoing that the complete operation of my invention will be recognized, and a further detail description would be unnecessary.
Such changes as are permissible by the subjoined claim may be resorted to Without departing 'from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention7 what l claim is support of the character described iii-- cluding a recessed block, a pulley carried by said block, said pulley being partially arranged Within said recess, a second recessed block mounted. on the lirst block, said pulley being arranged within the recesses of the blocks, a plate arranged adjacent said second block7 said plate cooperating with the lirst and second blocks to entirely inelose said pulley, and an endless carrier arranged on said pulley and extending from said blocks.
