Specification of Letters Patent.

T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH W. QRQM- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at McBain, in the county of Missaukee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Table Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wood-sawing maohines (subclass saw-table gages) of that style or kind in which the material being acted upon may be gaged accurately in thickness or dimensions and with certainty, convenience, and expeditiously; and the object is to provide the art with a machine which fulfils the characteristics enumerated above in an improved manner.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the annexed drawings, to be taken as a part of this specification, and wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the machine wherein the gage-block is illustrated as being in contact with the board, Which is shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation, the frame being partly broken away to disclose the operating-sprocket, and also showing the graduated dial and case. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the frame, fully disclosing the operating-gage mechanisi In the drawings like parts appearing in the different illustrations are designated by like notations, and reference being had thereto, A designates any suitable table. or support adapted to carry and support a carriage on which the material being acted on may be supported. As shown, the supporting-frame is illustrated in conventional lines, since the novel elements or features of the invention may be connected to any of the well-known frames or beds and associated with any of the carriages used in conjunction therewith. In the floor or plate of the frame is let in a plurality of rollers 1, on which is laid and supported a suitable longitudinally-movable o carriage 2 of such dimensions as will support the material being acted on by the saw. 3 designates a transverse driving-shaft locatednear one end of the table A and passed through the same and below the floor of said table, its forward end being provided with a hand Wheel, its rear end extending to about midway the width of the same, this shaft being supported near its rear end by means of a hanger 4, secured to or integrally formed with a plate 32, secured to the under side of the floor of the table, and on the same end thereof is secured a sprocket-pinion 5, overwhich a sprocket-chain is passed to another shaft with sprocket-pinion thereon, to be hereinafter explained.
6 designates a gage-operating shaft having screw-threads thereon, which is loosely journaled or supported in hangers 41 42, said shaft being also located below the table-floor in a direction with the shaft 3 and to one side of the same and'centrally of the table. This shaft has secured to its forward end a sprocket-pinion 7, over which a sprocket-chain 8 is passed, thus connecting the sprocket- pinions 5 and 7 and shafts 3 and 6 in operative relation.
9 designates a square opening formed in the rear of and midway the length of the table, over which is slidably located a gageblock 10. In the rear edge of the gage-block is secured an eye 11, to which is secured one end of a rope 12, said rope being passed through an opening 13 and around a pulley 1.4, secured to the walls of and within a ver tically-disposed rectangular casing 15, the lower end of whichis secured to the rear side of the table by means of the end of the gageoperating shaft 6.
16 designates a cylinder or roller journaled in the upper end of and within the casing 15 and around which the rope as hereinbefore described as passing around the pulley 14 also passes around this cylinder or roller 16, and to the free end of said rope is secured a weight 17 which operates in conjunction with the gage-screw to operate the sliding gage to and from the material to be out into slabs.
18 designates a dial having indices thereon, secured to the upper end and in front of the vertically-disposed rectangular casing, said dial being mounted concentric with the end of the cylinder or roller 16, which has a pointer 20 secured centrally thereto for indicating the width of the material to be cut.

2-1 designates a revolving circular saw shaft having its rear end bearing in the side of the table and its forward end terminating in a slot 22, formed in said table, the shaft 21 having secured to its forward end a circular saw 23 and upon its rear'end a pulley 24, over which maybe passed a pulley-belt for connection with any suitable power which may be adapted and applied to it for operating the saw.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of my invention will be obvious; but it may be briefly rehearsed as follows: The operator in operating the machine stands to the forward side thereof and in front of the dial. The drivingshaft with the hand-wheel thereon being on the ri hthand side of himself, he turns the drivingshaft, to which is connected the gage-operating screw-shaft. Through the medium of the sprocket pinions and chains motion is communicated to said screw-shaft, and in conjunction with the rope and weight in the dialcasing, secured to the endof the gage-block, the age-block is moved up against the material to be out, which in turn is carried to the saw and cut into slabs of predetermined widths. The operating screw-shaft to whatever point it is turned remains fixed. from any displacement, the pointer upon the dial indicating suchas, for example, beginning from zero to Fig. 1, which includes a quarter width, one-half, three-quarters, and a full width, the cylinder or roller to which the pointer is secured determining the movement of the pointer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

2. In a wood-sawing machine, the combination with a table having a plurality of rollers journaled in the floor thereof, a carriage supported by said rollers, a driving-shaft having secured to its. forward end a handwheel, an operating gage screw shaft, sprocket-pinions on the end of said screwshaft, and driving-shaft, a sprocket-chain passed over the said pinions; of a gage-block slid ably mounted on the floor of the table, a casing having an opening near its lower end, said casing being secured to and in the rear and side of the table, a rope secured to the rear edge of the gage-block, a pulley journaled in the casing near the lower end thereof; a roller journaled in the upper end of and within the casing, a rope passed around the roller and pulley, and a weight secured to the free end of said rope.

In a wood-sawing machine, the combination with a table having a plurality of rollers j ournaled in the floor thereof, a carriage supported by said rollers, a driving-shaft having secured to its forward end a handwheel, an operating gage screw shaft, sprocket-pinions on the end of said screwshaft, and driving-shaft, a sprocket-chain passed over the said pinions, a gage-block slidably mounted on the floor of the table, a casing having an opening near its lower end, said casing being secured to and in the rear and side of the table, a rope secured to the rear edge of the gage-block, a pulley journaled in the casing near the lower end thereof, a roller ournaled in the upper end of and within the casing, a rope passed around the roller and pulley, a Weight'secured to the free end of said rope;'of a dial having indices thereon secured to the upper end and in front of the casing provided with apointer for indicating the width of the material to be cut.
