FOLDING CRADLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led November 13, 1915. Serial No. 61,246.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WALTER G. OLDEN- DoRr, a citizen of the United States, resident of Etna, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Cradles; andI do hereby declare the` following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a combined cabinet and folding cradle.
One object of my invention is to provide a sectional cradle, the parts of which may be folded in a compact manner to facilitate their being inclosed within a cabinet.
A further object of my invention is to provide a construction whereby a cradle of greater length may be used than would be practical by any prevailing constructioin, in a cabinet of any given height.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly in section, showing my improved folding cradle in operative position in connection with a cabinet. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing certain Vparts of the cradle folded. Fig. 4 is a plan view, the casing being shown in section. Fig. 5 isa front elevation of the cabinet, the parts of the cradle being folded within cabinet. Fig. 6 is a view, in section, on line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Reference numerals in the following specications refer to like parts inthe drawings in which a cabinet 10 is shown having a door 11 pivotally hinged at 11 to the sides of the cabinet. To the upper end ofthe door 11, on the inner side thereof, hinges 12 are secured on which the legs 12 arecarried and swing into the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, to support the upper end of the door 11 level with the opposite end when said door is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and into the position shown in Fig. 6 when the cradle is inclosed in the cabinet. Suitably secured onthe inner side of said door are bearings 13 which are separated so as to leave a spa-ce as at 13 between said bearings. A pin 14 is supported upon each pair of said bearings. A bottom section 15 of a cradle, formed of slats 15', which are secured to'the transverse strips 15 is supported upon the pins 14 by the end slats of said bottom section 15, being mounted on said pins and between bearings. End sections 16 are arranged on the opposite ends Patented July 4,1916.
of the bottom section, and arms 17 have one end secured at 17 to the end sections, the other end of the arms being pivotally secured at 17" to the strips 15, whereby the said end sections may be folded over the bottom section, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. Side sections 18, 19, are arranged on opposite sides of the bottom section to form the sides of the cradle. Arms 20 have one end secured to the ends of the side sections, the other ends of said arms being pivotally secured to the ends of the strips 15. The length of the end sections 16 is shorter vthan the space between the side sections, the purpose of which is to avoid having the end sections so long that their extremities would, when they are in folded position (Fig. 3), prevent the movement of the side sections, 18, 19, on the arms 20 to the folded position shown in Fig. 3.
Fixedly secured to the ends of the side section 18 and at right angles thereto, are blocks 21 (Figs. 2 and 3), and suitably hinged to the side section 19 are blocks 22, said blocks serving, when the end and side sections are upright, to complete the ends of the cradle (Figs. 2 and 4) in which position small hooks 23` carried by the end sections are engaged in the eyes 24 to sustain the parts.
With the parts arranged and ready forA use, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the cradle may be rocked on the pins 14. Small coil springs 25 are suitably secured to the eX- tremities of the end slats of the bottom section 15 and to the door 11 at an angle suciently oblique, relative to the cradle, to cause any movement of the cradle in the direction of the cabinet to tend to compress the springs and to prevent movement of the cradle on the pins 14 in the direction of the cabinet, while the cradle is being rocked, by reason of the resistance of the springs. Stops 26 (Fig. 1) having a small arm 26 and fulcrumed as at 27, are suitably secured to the door 11, one und-er each side of the cradle, so that by foot pressure, if desired, upon the arms 26', the stops 26 may be caused to frictionally engage one of the slats 15 to prevent the cradle from rocking, a reverse movement of the arm disengaging the stops which then occupies the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. When it is desired to inclose the cradle within the cabinet the same may be done by unfastening the hooks 23, then folding the end sections down over the bottom section (Fig. 3). rThe side section 18 is folded over the end sections, the blocks 22` are then turned on their hinges from the right angled position relative to the side section 19 to a position between the rungs 16 of said side section, so that said blocks do not interfere with the side sections, and the section 19 may be then folded upon the section 18 as shown in Fig. 3. The length. of the cradle will not permit it to be passed into the cabinet in the position it occupies on the pins la (Fig. 1), and therefore the folded parts and the bottom section are advanced toward the cabinet by moving the bottom section in that direction on the pins 14. The legs 12 may then be turned onto the inner side of the door and the latter closed to inclose the cradle within the cabinet as shown in Fig. 6.
The provision for the movement of the cradle is shown in the drawings only on a small scale, but it will be apparent that the same may be affected to a much greater eX- tent than is herein illustrated and allow of a material advantage in the length of cradle used in connection with aicabinet.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a folding cradle, abottom, oppositely disposed. side sections arranged lengthwise on said bottom, arms secured to said side sections and pivotally connected to said bottom, end sections, arms secured to said end sections and pivotally secured to said bottom, said end sections being shorter in length than the space intervening between said sides so as to permit the side sections to be folded on said end sectionswhen the latter are folded on said bottom, blocks lixedly attached at each end of one of said side sections and at` right angles thereto, blocks suitably hinged to each end of the opposite side section, said blocks being for the purpose of serving jointly with the said end sections to forni the ends of the cradle when said end sections are not folded, said hinged blocks being for the purpose of permitting the same to be swung out of a right` angled position, relative to the side section, to which they are attached, so that the latter may be folded in closer relation upon the other side section.
2. ln combination with an inclosure, a door hinged to said inclosure so as to be horizontally disposed when open, bearings spaced apart and secured on the interior side of the door of said inclosure and adjacent to the ends thereof, pins carried on said bearings, a folding cradle mounted upon said pins so as to be horizontally movable thereon between said bearings, springs secured to said door and to the bottom of said cradle to resist any horizontal movement of the cradle in the direction of the inclosure while said cradle is being operated.
3. In a folding cradle, a bottom, oppositely disposed side sections arranged lengthwise on said bottom., arms secured to said side sections and pivotally connected to said bottom, end sections, arms secured to said end sections and pivotally secured to said bottom, said end sections being shorterin length than the space intervening between said sides, blocks operatively secured to one of said side sections, one at each end thereof, for the purpose of arranging said bloclrs at right angles to said side section when the parts of the cradle are unfolded, and of turning said blocks out of said right angle position for the purpose ofcallowing said side section to be folded on the oppositely disposed side section. Y
t. In combination with an inclosure, a door hinged to said inclosure so as to be horizontally disposed when open, a folding cradle carried on the door of said. inclosure, bearings spaced apart and secured to said door, pins carried horizontally upon said. bearings, said cradle being mounted upon said pins So as to be horizontally movable thereon between said bearings for the purpose of permitting said cradle to enter the inclosure with the movement of the door of said inclosure. A
In testimony whereof, the said WALTER G. OLDnNDonF, have hereunto set my hand.
