To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE CARROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Salem, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Window-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates an improved window screen and has as its primary ob jeot to provide a device of this character adapted to yieldably engage within a window opening for holding the screen in position and wherein the screen will, wlthin' certain reasonable limits, be adapted to ad just itself to consequently fit within window openings of various sizes.
The invention has as a further object in this connection to provide a window screen having extensions slidably mounted thereon and adapted to be normally urged to engage the window casing and wherein corner plates will be provided for filling the space between adjacent extremities of they said extensions and consequently provide a tight joint.
The invention has as a further object to provide an arrangement wherein the said corner plates will be adjustable upon certain of the extensions and may consequently be easily moved into operative position.
And the invention has as a still further object to provide an arrangement wherein the means employed for connecting the extensions with the frame of the screen will be of simple construction and will be adapted to guide the extensions in their movement 1s a fragmentary perspective view particu-i larly showing one of the corner plates ofthe screen, Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view more particularly illustrating the mounting of the extensions carried by the screen, Fig. 4: is a fragmentary perspective view more particularly showing the construction of the extensions as well as the construction of the screen frame.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a screen'frame including side and end rails 10. Each of these rails is substantially channel shaped as more particularly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings and is preferably formed from a single piece of suitable sheet metal bent intermediate its ends to provide overlapping flanges 11. At their meeting ends, the flanges of one rail are overlapped with the flanges of the adjacent rail to be secured thereto in any suitable manner. A rigid frame is thus provided and received at its margin between the overlapping flanges of the several rails of the frame is a reticulate body portion 12 preferably formed of suitable wire mesh. It will, of course, be understood that the frame of my improved screen may be varied in size and general contour to fit varlous windows or other openings wherein the Slidably mounted upon the rails 10 are extensions 13 and 14:. Connecting the extensions with the rails 10 are a plurality of guide members or pins 16. Each of these members is preferably formed from a single length of suitable wire inserted through alined openings formed in the adjacent rail 10 and the extension arranged to coact therewith, and is bent at its outer end to provide a terminal lug 17 connecting the wire with the extension. At its inner end, the wire is bent to provide a terminal hook 18 engaging one of the flanges 11 of the said rail. Each of theextensions 13 and 14 is preferably provided withtwo of the guide members 16 arranged adjacent the extremities thereof As will be readily understood, the extensions 13 and 14 are mounted to slide freely upon the wires 16 and interposed between said extensions and the rails lO of the screen frame are a plurality of preferably helical the adjacent rails 10,.it being observed, in this connection that the springs 19 arranged to surround the guide members, the springs 19 normally urging the extensions to the limit of their movement away from the screen frame upon the guide members to normal position in en agement with the terminal lugs 17 thereo Slidably mounted upon the extensions 14 adjacent the extremities thereof, are substantially fiat corner plates or closure mem here 20. These members are oblong in general contour and at the inner extremities thereof are rolled to provide handles 21. The body portions of the plates 20 areprovided with longitudinally extending slots 22 which freely receive pins 23 connecting the said plates with the adjacent flanges 11 of the extensions. It will now be noted that the plates 20 are of a width equal to the width of the contiguous flanges 15'of the extensions and are slidable longitudinally upon the pins 23 to a position with the plates abutting the extenslons 13' between the flanges 15. When so arranged, the plates 20 will, as will be clear, fill the space be-- tween the adjacent ends of the said extensions. v
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have shown my improved screen in position within a window opening and in operative engagement with a conventional type of casing 24 in which is slidably mounted a window 25. When arranging the screen in position within the window opening, the extensions 13 thereof are compressed upon the screen frame when lateral movement of the screen within the casing will be permitted. Upon the release of the said extensions, the springs 19 thereof will urge the extensions into engagement with the sides of the window casmg to thus rigidly hold the screen inposition.v The extensions l l may be operated in a similar manner to permit the screen to be fitted between the bottom rail of the window 25 and the sill at the bottom of the window 0 ening, one of the said extensions yielda ly engaging the said sill and the other engaging the window and thus cooperating with the extensions 13 to maintain the screen in position. After the screenhas been so engaged within the window opening, the plates.
20 are moved longitudinally upon the pins 23 in the manner previouslyv described to abut the sides of the window casing and to .xonsequen'tly close the space between ad jacent ends of the rails 13 and 14 to thus provide a tight closure, the plates completmg the rectangular conformation of the screen when in place. It will therefore be seen that I provide a very simple and efficient construction for the purpose set forth. Formed in the upper walls of the slots 22 area plurality of notches 26 adapted to detachably receive the pins 23 supporting the corner plates. After the plates have been i aeaaee adjusted, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the pins 23 maybe respectively engaged within one of these notches for looking the plates at adjustment. Furthermore, it will be observed that said plates are also thus adapted to lockthe extensions 13 at adjustment in engagement with the side rails of the casing 24 so that the said extensions cannot be compressed and the screen thus removed by any one upon the outside of the window.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A window screen including a frame, coacting extensions shiftable upon the frame, and a corner plate carried by one of said extensions and adjustable to a position in'engagement with the other of said extensions.
2. A window screen including a frame,
coacting extensions slidably mounted thereon and having adjacent extremities thereof terminating in spaced relation, and a c0rner plate carried by one of said extensions and adjustable thereon to fill the space between the extremities of the extensions.
3. A window screen including a frame, coacting extensions slidably embracing adjacent rails of the frame and freely connected thereto,.and a closure member carried by one of said extensions and movable thereon to engage the other extension adjacent one extremit thereof.
4. A win ow screen including a frame, coacting extensions slidably mounted upon adjacent rails of the frame, guides" freely connecting'the extensions with the said rails, and a closure member carried by one of said extensions and adjustable thereon to engage the other extension adjacent one extremity thereof.
5. A window screen including a frame, coacting extensions each having overlapping flanges freel embracing one of said rails, guides slida ly connecting the extensions with the rails, and a closure member carried by one of said extensions andmovable thereon to engage the other extension adjacent one extremity thereof.
6. A window screen including a frame, coactin extensions carried'by adjacent rails of the rame, guides slidably connecting the said extensions with the rails, springs surrounding said guides and interposed beable means urging the extensions away from the frame, and a closure member carried by one of said extensions and movable thereon to engage the other extension adjacent one extremity thereof.
8. A window screen includin a frame having adjacent rails provided with flanges, coacting extensions mounted upon said rails, guides slidably connecting the extensions with the rails, said guides being formed at the outer extremities thereof with lugs adapted to engage the extensions and at their inner extremities with hooks adapted to engage certain flanges of the rails, a plurality of springs interposed between the rails and the extensions and surrounding the said guides, said springs normally urging the extensions away from the rails to engage said lugs with the hoolrs of the guides in engagement wlth the said flanges, and a closure member carried by one of said extensions and movable thereon to engage the other extension adjacent one extremity thereof.
9. A Window screen including a frame, coacting extensions adjustable upon the frame, a corner plate carried by one of said extensions and movable to a position in engagement with the other of said extensions, and means for locking the said corner plate at adjustment.
10. A device of the character described including a frame, coacting extensions carried thereby, a corner member carried by one of said extensions and adjustable to a position in engagement with the other of said extensions, there being a notch formed in the said member, and means for engagement in said notch for holding the plate at adjustment.
11. A window screen including a frame, coacting extensions carried thereby, a slotted corner plate carried by one of said extensions and adjustable to position in engagement with the other of said extensions, there being a notch formed in the plate communicating with the said slot, and a pin extending through the said slot for freely connecting the plate with the said first mentioned extension and adapted for engagement in said notch for holding the plate at adjustment.
