Patented Get. 9, 1951 UNITED. STATES-PATENT OFFICE Q I "2,570,936 Y REMOVABLE vvrNDow SASH Roy J. .Riley; 'lulsa, Okla. Application Aug ust 23, 1945, Serial No. e azzs' 3 Claims. (01.20%1) The invention relates to removable window the sash can be inwardly moved from the window frame or hinged inwardly at their lower ends.
A furtherobje'ct is to interpose a metallic strip between the sides of the sash and the frame and to provide the strip with a vertical channel for the reception of the spring roll of the parting strip and the inner edge of the plate or metallic strip with an inturned roll for the reception of the roll of the inside strip which is sprung into engagement with a spring moulding carried by the inside sash.
A further object is to make the upper sash narrower than the lower sash so that the parting strip, when hinged inwardly, will allow the upper sash to clear the strip. I
A further object is to so shape the parting strip roll and channel of the metallic spring carried strip that the parting strip will closely hug the metallic strip when in inoperative'position.
A further object is to provide a spring strip between the sash and parting strip and acting against the hinged inside strip.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed,
it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
' In the drawings: 1 Figure 1 is a detail perspective view showing in section the side of a window frame, the sash andthe various strips.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the inner side of the window frame, 'a portion of the lower sash and the inside strip.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view through a portion of the frame and upper sash, showing the parting strip in open position for removal of the upper sash.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view through a window frame showing a modified form of inside strip.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 showing a further modified inside strip.
Figure 6' is a, perspective view of the form shown in Figure 4. 5
Figure 7 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the window frame and sash, showing the sash tilted inwardly. I Figure 3-isa'p'ers pectiveview of the sashlift used' as a hinging point for the lower sash as shown in Figure "'7.
Figure 9 is a vertical view showing a, modified form ofstrip; v Figure 10 is a perspective view of thestrip shown in Figure 9.
Figure 11 is an enlarged detail of Figure 9. Figure 12 is a modified form of strip mounting. Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the side of a conventional form of window frame from which the usual inside strip and parting strip are removed. 'Secured to the-frame I are'filler strips 2 and 3. The filler strip 2 is narrower than the filler strip 3 and registers with-the side of the lower sash 4 while the filler strip 3 registers with the side of the upper sash 5. These strips are of different width so that the upper sash 5 will'hinge' inwardly as shown in Figure '7, thereby clearing the hinged parting strips 6 as shown in Figure 3. The side of the frame I is provided with a vertically extending facing strip I, extending around or over filler strips 2 and 3, and providedwith a rectangularly shaped channel 8 for the reception of the spring roll 9 of the parting strip 6. The spring roll allows the parting strip 6 to flex and to snap to operative or' inoperative position, shown in dotted lines in Figure 3. Parting strip 6 is bent upon itself at H] and is received in the channel H of the facing strip 1 when in open position. The outer edge of the facing strip 'l terminates in a spring flange I2- in the groove I3 in the outer face of the upper sash 5 thereby forming a guide and a weather stripping.
The inner edge of the facing strip 1 is provided with a vertically disposed roll M, in which is disposed and hingedly mounted the roll I5of the flexible inside strip l6, which inside strip springs into the channel I! of the spring moulding l8 carried by the inner face of the lower sash 4. The strip I6 is forced to the full line position shown in Figure 2 when it is desired to remove the lower sash, and at which time the lower sash has been moved to its lower position, as shown in Figure 7, so that the screw head I9 is received in the enlarged end 20 of the arcuate slot 2! in the sash lift, and then the lower sash can be hinged inwardly and the screw I head l9 now being in the restricted portion of the slot 2l will hold the sash against falling to the floor. After the glass in the lower sash has been washed the parting strip 6 is swung to the position shown in Figure 3 with the upper sash in lowered position as shown in Figure 7, and at which time brackets 22, carried by the upper sash, are held by headed screws 23 in slots similar to 20 and 2| of the sash lift 2Ia, hence it will be seen that the upper sash can be washed on both sides without reaching through the window or using a ladder.
Referring to Figures 4 and 6, the construction is substantially the same as in Figures 1 to 3 excepting the inside strip is formed fromtwo hinged sections 24 and 25. The section 25 is slidably engaged with the section 24 so it can move vertically for placing the screw heads 26 into and out of registry with the notches 27 in the section 25. It will be noted that the section 24 is connectedby a hinged connection 28 similar to the parting strip connection shown in Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 5, showing a further modification, the parting strip is the same as in the other forms, however the inside strip 29 is mounted in a roll M in a similar manner, as shown in Figure 1, but springs into a channel 30 in the inner side of the lower'sash 4 and against the spring action of a channeled spring strip 3|, interposed between the sash andthe parting strip. I
The header screws 23 shown in Figure 7are carried by filler blocks 32 secured to the frame to the inside of the outside strip 33.
Although the device has been shown, in connection with one side of a window frame, it is obvious it can be applied to both sides. The sash lift cords and mechanism have been eliminated for purposes of clearness, however it is the intention to use sash cords attached to the lower ends of the sash so that the sash will easily hinge inwardly.
Referring to the modified form shown in Figure 9, the inside strip 24a. and the parting strip 6a. are provided with rolls 34 on their vertical edges, and the strips are longitudinally bowed so they are frictionally held when in operative position by the edges of the vertical strips 35, carried by the frame I and by the filler strip 2. The filler strip 2 is longitudinally channeled at 36 to receive the outer r011 34 of the parting strip 6a,, and the frame I is channeled at 37 and 38 to receive the inner rolls of the partingstrip 6a and the inside strip 24a. It will be noted that when it is desired to remove the sash the inside strip 24a. is pulled inwardlyand hinged to the dotted line positions shown in Figure 9, and after the lower sash 4 is swung inwardly the parting strip 6:; is moved inwardly and hinged to the dotted line position where it is spring held as shown in Figure 9 by the entrance of the edges of the strips 35 into the rolls 34, otherwise the operation is the same. By slightly bowing the strips 6a as shown in Figure 11 a frictional binding will take place on the sash, which will adjust itself to irreg- 4 ularities and at the same time act as a spring weather stripping.
Referring to Figure 12 wherein a further modified form is shown, instead of filler strips, a metallic channeled structure 39 is provided, particularly adapted for metal windows, and the sash 4 and 5' are provided with spaced flanges 40, which spaced flanges engage the parting strip 6a in a manner similar to Figure 9, and the inside strip 24a engages the inside flange 40 of the lower sash 4, otherwise the structure and operation is the same as in Figure 9. It will be seen that by simply moving the parting strip and inside strip inwardly, and hinging the same inwardly to the dotted line position, the lower and upper sash can be successively removed.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
l. The combination of a sash strip, frame and sash, said sash strip being carried by the side of the frame, said strip having one of its longitudinal edges provided with a roll, a vertical channel in the frame and in which said roll is disposed, said channel being rectangularly shaped in cross section, a vertical slot in the front wall of the channel, said strip being slidably mounted in said slot in the front wall of the channel, said rollengaging opposite walls of the channel, said roll, at its inner side adjacent-the strip, being open, the front wall of the channel being narrow and-of a width whereby the front wall of the channel willpass through the rollslot when the strip is pulled outwardly and enter the roll when the strip-is hingedly moved on the front wall as a fulcrum and forming means whereby the strip can be hingedly moved substantially ninety degrees to a parallel position adjacent the front wall of the channel.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein the other side of the strip is provided with a roll.
3. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein the strip is transversely bowed and forming means whereby the strip is transversely flexed against one side of the channel in the front wall.
