UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD H. STOKES AND RAYMOND E. GRYMES, OF NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY.
RECORDING JUMPING-ROPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD H. STOKES and RAYMOND E. GRYMEs, citizens of the United States, residing at New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recording Jumping- Ropes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in jumping ropes.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a jumping rope which will automatically register the number of times it is turned.
Another object is to provide a handle for a jumping rope which carries therein a counting mechanism or register which is connected with one end of the jumping rope whereby each time the rope is turned the register will record it.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation of a jumping rope made in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of a jumping rope and one of its handles having my counting mechanism therein, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, the register and rope being shown in elevation.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a rope of suitable length and having mounted on its opposite ends the handles 11 and 12. One end of the rope is secured within the handle 11 by any suitable means which will permit the easy relative rotation of the rope and the handle. The handle 12 has a longitudinal bore 14 through which the remaining end of the rope is inserted. The rear end of the handle is provided with a removable cap 15 through which is inserted the counter mechanism 16, said counter being mounted in a casing 17 which is firmly clamped in a recess 18 when the cap is properly secured in place. The counter may be of any well known construction and which is suitable for this purpose. The rope is secured to the counter by means of the clamp 19 so that as the rope turns within the bore 14 it will actuate the counter.
It will thus be seen that each time the rope is turned over the jumpers head, the counter will register once, the total number of jumps being obtained when the jumper misses, by inspecting the number through the sight opening 20 formed in the handle.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a jumping rope, of a handle, a counting mechanism rigidly mounted in the handle, and means connect ing one end of the rope with a movable part of the counting mechanism.
2. In a jumpingmope, a handle, a stepby-step counter mounted in the handle, the handle having a longitudinal bore leading to the counter and said handle having a sight opening in one side through which the numbers of the counter can be seen, and a rope end rotatably disposed in the bore and secured to the counter.
3. The combination with a jumping rope having a handle, rotatably mounted on one end thereof, of a counting mechanism carried by the handle and connected to the rope and handle for counting the number of revolutions of the rope with respect to the handle.
4. The combination with a jumping rope and its handle, of means mounted in the handle and connected to the rope for counting the revolutions of one with respect to the other.
In testimony whereof, we affix our signatures, in the presence of two witnesses.
