REUBIN MARTIN WEIDER AND JACOB MEALS, OF CARTHAGE, ILLDTOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,888, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, REUBIN MARTIN WE1- DER and JACOB MEALS, of Carthage, Illinois, have made a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification This invention is designed to produce a substantial portable felice, having certain peculiar advantages and qualities combined therein.
In the drawing' accompanying this, Figure 1 is a cross-section of the fence at the joining of two panels. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same parts.
The fence is formed of panels, as A B, joined at the ends in a direct line. The panels are formed of boards C D E F, or other number, with cross-parts G H I nailed thereto to form a frame. The parts G H, at the two ends of panel, are set on one side of the panels or the boards, and the cross-part I in the center of the panel has the boards placed alternately on each side of it in such a way as to form a truss. This is for the purpose of enabling long portable panels to. be formed of light boards and have an ele- Inent of stiii'ness which ordinary flat panels do not have, and which a fence nailed onto fixed posts might not require. The separate panels are lapped at the ends for a few inches, and are held together by a bolt or pin, K. This enables the fence to adjust itself to the surface of the ground up and down hill, turning on these bolts as pivots. If a gate is at any time required at any place in the line, one of these bolts may be removed and a panel turned up on end, moving on this pivot, thus providing for the two functions of fence and gate in one. On each side, at each joint of panels, are triangular frames M and N, which rest with one side against the fence and have their outer corners resting on the ground. The bolt K passes through the upright parts of these, also, and holds the whole securely together in such a way that the two frames M N support the fence oli' the ground and from side strain, forming a substantial and well-supported portable fence. At the ends of a line of fence, and at other points where stili'ness is required, another bolt, L, may be put through the whole similar to K. The relative heights of the two frames may be adjusted to suit inclination of the ground sidewise by additional holes for bolt K, through them, higher or lower.
Ve claim- The combination and arrangement, in one portable fence, of the several parts of panels A B, formed of boards forming trusses, lapped beside each other at the joint, so that one may, when desired, be turned up to serve as a gate or passage, the pivot-bolt K holding all the parts at the joint together, the frames M N at the joint to support the same, and arranged so as to remain in place and support the fence if one panel is raised, as set forth.
