MOSES T. IBURBANK, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS..
I Lemsamlvo. 88,842, dated .11ml 18,1869. I
I Mpaovnn EXTENSION-nennen The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patentnnd making part-of the same.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, Moses T. BUR.BA;NK, of Lawrence, in the county of v-'Essex, and State of YMassachusetts, have invented anew and improvedEXten siou-Laddcr; and Ifdo hereby declare the following toibe a full, clear, and exactV description thereof, referness, and by supporting the same by extension-braces,I
thus securing a safe, strong, and durable ladder, which will not be'likely to be thrown over, either by awrong adjustment, accidentally, or fby the eect of wind; and the obj ect is' also to facilitate the storage of.the ladder,
' which, when taken'apart, occupies but little room; and
My invention consists in forming a ladder in pieces of equal length, and attaching to the outside of the rails plates, by meansof bolts, and metal plates and bolts,'aud said plates breaking joints in the middle of the rails; and
It consists further, in providing two or more braces, each being composed oftwo lengths of strips of wood, breaking, also, joints in the. middle of each strip, and `being bolted together or otherwise secured, these braces being attached to the ladder by means of ropes, or otherwise, so as to allow a free bracingin the desired direction, and an easy attaching'and adjusting .to the ladder. v
Referring to the drawings, A is a ladder, composed of the shortladders au a, b b b, and plates c c, the latter being attached vto the rails b b by washers and bolts d d, and where two ends of either rails or plates meet, by plates e and bolts ff.
It will be observed that the upper and lower plates c c are of only one-half the length of the intermediate' ones, for the reason that 'it is desirable to make all the rest of uniform length.
g g are-the` braces, composed each of two sets of pieces, breaking `joints in the middle, and rmly bolted together, and provided at their upper ends withfan iron strap and ring, through which therope passes forv attaching the brace'to the ladder.
The ends of the rails and plates are scarfed down and rounded, for the purpose of receiving a band, h, which latter protects the-ends from injury.
If it is required to use a short ladder, a portion of the ladder is taken oli', as shown in 'g'. l, leaving the lower end for the required length of ladder, with'onehalf the plates c c projecting beyond.
The braces g g have also to be shortened, and at.
ltached to a convenient place of the ladder.
' Care must be taken toill up the projecting endwith a spare piece of one-half the length of a piece composing the brace.A
If a long ladder is needed, then put as many rails, plates, and brace-pieces on as willbc-found necessary.
As all these pieces have to be cut and itted after a pattern, all the bolt-holes will come in their respective places, and any of the pieceswill fit for the other.
Thus it will be seen, that aladder of great useful-l ness, and adapted to extension, may be produced with little work and inconvenience.
What 1 claim as new,.and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
The ladder A, composed of parts b c, framedand connected, as described, and supported -by braces g g, of similar construction.
In testimony whereof, I have signed 'my naine to this specification, in the presence of two. subscribing witnesses;
MOSES .l. BURBANK. Witnesses:
CARROLL D. WRIGHT,
M.' S. G. Wmnn.
