GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J ne 27, 1916 Application filed July 7, 1914. Serial No. 849,467.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALBERT M. VIG, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Hazel Run, in the county of Yellow Medicine, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates;
' and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invent-ion relates to gates.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a gate which can be opened and closed by the occupant of a vehiclewithout the necessity of alighting.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a gate of the character named which will be simple in construction, efiicient in use, easily operated and which can be manufactured and installed at a comparatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts tobe hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved gate structure with the gate in closed position; and Fig. 2, a plan view of the gate.
Referring to the drawings the improved gate is shown as comprising posts 11 and 12 and an intermediate post 13 said posts being mounted in the ground.
The gate element of the structure is inclicated generally at A and comprises upper and lower longitudinal members 14 and 15 respectively and an intermediate longitudinal member 16, said longitudinal members beingconnected together by forward and rear cross members 17 and 18 respectively, the upper longitudinal member 14 being extended a considerable distance beyond the rear cross member 18 as at 19 for a purpose that will presently appear. This extension which is engaged a supporting cable 23 havlng its terminals secured to the intermediate and rear posts 13 and 12 respectively.
Mounted upon the intermediate post 13 is a gulde member 24 through which the intermediate longitudinal member of the gate slides.
Mounted upon the post 12 is a guiding and supporting bracket 25 which receives the extension 19 and supports the rear end of the gate during a portion of the opening movement of the latter. 4 T
Mounted on opposite sides of the gate are posts 28 and 29 for a purpose that will presently appear.
Pivotally mounted on the cross member 17 is a latch 30 adapted to engage a keeper 31 mounted upon the post 11 to secure the gate against movement to open position. Pivoted on the upper longitudinal member 14 adjacent the cross member 17 is an arm.
32 connected to the latch 30 by means of a link 33. A spring 34 has one end secured to the link 33 and its other end to the cross member 17 and constantly tends to hold the latch 30 in looking position.
7 Depending from the lower longitudinal member 15 is a bracket 35 in which is journaled a roller 36 bearing upon the base member 10 and serving to support the forward end of the gate A as will be apparent.
Secured to the arm 21 is one end of a flexible cable 37 which is slidably engaged through a bracket 38 carried by the post 13 and also through the upper end of the post 28. This cable has secured thereto an'operating handle 39. Also secured to the arm 21 is one end of a flexible cable 40 which is slidably engaged through the bracket 38 and through the upper end of the post 29, said cable having a handle 41 secured to the free end thereof. Secured to the arm 32 is one end of a wire 42 nd attached to the free through an eye member 44 and then slidably engaged through the post 28 and has attached to its free end a handle 45; Another flexible cable 46 has one end secured to the free end of the wire 42 and is engaged through an eye member 47 carried by the post 12 and then slidably engaged through the post 29. A handle 48 is secured to the free end of the cable 46.
When the gate A is in closed position same can be op n d by pulling upon either the cable 43 or the cable 46. The initial pull on either of these cables will rock the arm 32 and lift the latch 30 from engagement with the keeper. Further pull on the cable 43 or 46 will move the gate to open position. To close the gate it is only necessary to pull upon either the cable 37 or the cable 40. As a means for operating the gate is disposed on each side thereof it will be apparent that the gate can be opened and closed by the occupant of a vehicle without the necessity of alighting.
What is claimed is In a gate structure, the combination of spaced forward and rear posts, an intermediate post having a bracket provided with openings and mounted on the upper end thereof, a gate slidably connected to the intermediate post, a bracket on the rear post, an extension on the rear end of said gate adapted to be received and supported by the bracket on the rear post during a portion of the opening movement of the gate, a U- shaped member pivoted to the extension on the gate, posts mounted on respective sides of the intermediate post, each provided with two openings, flexible operating connections slidably engaged through certain of the openings in the last named posts respectively and through openings in the bracket on the intermediate post and having corresponding terminals secured to the U-shaped member, and flexible operating connections slidably engaged through certain of the openings in the last named posts and around the rear post and having corresponding ends connected with the gate.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT M. VIG.
