IMPROVEMENTIN BUNDLING-PRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,829, dated September 12, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARLO R. TAYLOR, of Ionia, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Bundling-Press for Staves, Lath, etc; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my press with a bundle of staves packed and tied, and Fig. 2 is a similar View, showing the press empty.

This invention has for its object the construction of a packing-press in which staves, lath, and similar articles may be compressed while being tied in bundles 5 and it consists in the novel and peculiar construction and arrangement of its several parts, the same being operated as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing, A represents the frame of my device, so constructed as to have two pairs of standards, A, rising above the upper plane of the frame at the back part thereof. Between these standards the cross-sills B are placed to form the bed of the press. 0 are two levers, which are pivoted between the sills, as seen at (0, their inner arms being scarfed away to permit them to overlap each other and thus give them sufficient length for the required leverage. b is a plate secured to the outer end of each lever, playing between the standards. If the bundle is to be pressed on andto a curved outline in cross-sections, then these plates should be curved to the desired shape. D are treadles, hinged to the lower girt of the frame, and to each of which the long arm of one of the levers is connected by a rod or link, E. By depressing the left treadle the right plate I) will be forced up, and vice versa. F is a bar, hinged on a pin or rod at each of the rear standards, and is provided on its under face with a laterally-projeoting plate, 0, which engages with a ratchet, d, on the adjacent side of the front standard. The space at one end of the press is closed by a board secured across the standards at that side.

The operation of the press is as follows: The packer places the requisite number of staves, laths, or other articles to be packed in the space between the standards, resting on the plates 1) and abutting against the board, which closes one end, previously, however, having laid two cords or wires across the sills, as shown at e in Fig. 2 he then presses down the bars F on the articles and engages them with the ratchet d, as shown in Fig. 1; he then depresses the right treadle, which throws up the left plate I), as shown in Fig. 2, which compresses that end of the bundle, keeping up the pressure thereon until he has tied the cord around that end, when he releases the treadle and ties the cord about the other end, by proceedin g in the manner just described.

The press is simple and inexpensive of con struction, while its ease and certainty in operation and perfection in result will be conceded on reference to the accompanying drawing.
