JOHN BRIGGS, OF LOUISVILLE, -KENTUOKQ ASSIGN OR TO HIMSELF AND J.
J. HAIR, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PRESSES.l
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,75 l dated October :21, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Brtiees, of Louisville, in the county of .Ieerson and State of Kentucky, have invented `a new and' Improved Implement or Device for Gompressing Tobacco; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of my invention, Fig. 2, an end view of the same. p
Similar letters fof reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved implement or device for compressing tobacco plugs or rolls for boxing.
The object of the invention is to obtain a simple implement for the purpose-one thatl may be much more readily manipulated than those hitherto arranged, and far more durable or less liable to break. 4
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I
will proceed to describe it.
A represents what may be termed .the body or main portion77 of the device, which is constructed of wood, and of scroll form in its transverse section-*that is to say, it departs from a true cylinder by a regular spiral curve sufciently to form a shoulder or ledge, a, the whole length of A. Through the center of A there is a square opening, Z1, which may be lined with metal plates, and the exterior of A is also covered with metal, c. Heavy sheetiron will answer the purpose. The body A is provided with a door, B, formed by detaching by radial cuts a longitudinal seotion from A, the cuts extending to two corners ofthe opening Z), so that one side of said opening will be formed by the door, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This door is hung to the'V body Abystrong hinges d cl at the side opposite to that where the shoulder or ledge a is formed. The body A is encompassed by two strong metal bands, e e, and the hinges d d are formed in these bands, the latter extending over the door B, and reaching nearly to the shoulder c. The ends of the bands e e on the door have rods fitted in them, or one rod, f, maybe fittedin both, andsaid bands are slotted near the rod f, as shown at g, in order to expose a portion ofthe rods, as shown clearly shoulder or ledge a. The pin fi, which connects the arms 7th to the links D, extends from one link to the other, as shown in Fig. l, and the ends ofthe arms 7L h are provided with notched projections j j, as shown in Fig. 2, to fit in slots g and against the rod f in the ends of the bands e e on the door B. The outer end ofthe bar C has a hole or opening, k, made through it to admit of a rod, E, being passed through. This rod is bent or curved at one end in the form of a hook, E', and said hook is fitted in a link, F, which is attached to or passes through the ends of two bars, ZZ, theI opposite ends of said bars being attached one to each bar e. The opposite or outer end of the rod E-has a screw-thread, m, out on it to receive a nut, G, which is provided with a handle or crank, H.
From the above description it will be seen that the links D D form what may betermed double joints or hinges for the arms h 7L of the bar O, and admit ofthe notched projecticns j j being iitted on or against and withdrawn from the rod f,- and it will also be seen that the arms 7L 71, are bent levers, which, when the outer and free end of the bar Gis forced toward the body A under the action ot' the nut G, will press` the doorB inward and compress the tobacco in the opening b. In thus actuating the bar C to obtain the pressure the strain of said bar is brought to 'bear at two opposite points on the bands e e ofthe body A, and the latter is well calculated to resist the strain, as the bands e e serve as loops, and effectually prevent the rupturing of the body. After the compressing operation is effected the nut G is unscrewed, so as to loosen the bar C, and the notched projections j j are removed from the rods fand the door B, so that the compressed tobacco may be taken from b and replaced by other tobacco, which is acted 'upon in the same way. t
llhe device 1s extremely simple, maybe manipulated with the greatest facility, and con.- structed at asmall cost.
Patent, is-
Having thus described my invention what I l 2. The manner of applying,` the lever C and claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters the screw-rod E to the box or body A-to Wit, by means of the links or double joints D D,
l. The box or body A, constructed of spiral the link F, bars Z Z, and bands 0e, as described. or scroll form in its transverse section, so as to form a ledge or shoulder, a, and provided with a door, B, -in combination Witli'tlie bar or W'itnesses: lever C, screw-rod E, and nut G, all arranged as and 'for the purpose herein set forth.
