GHIL-DS SLEEPING-GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented June 26), 1916.
Application filed December 11, 1915. Serial No. 66,239.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, DOROTHY C. FLANNI- GAN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Childrens Sleeping- (Fiarments, of which the following is a full, clear. concise, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to garments.
The object of the invention is to provide a childs sleeping garment of improved construction.
After a child is dressed for the night and put to bed, it often becomes desirable to change the childs diaper. As the sleeping room is usually cold, due to fresh air required in sleeping rooms, changing the diaper heretofore has resulted in chilling a large part of the childs body, particularly the lower part of the body and the lower limbs.
My invention aims to provide a garment such that the uncovering and chilling of the childs body and legs will be reduced to a minimum and in which the work of changing the diaper will not be interfered with by the clothing.
The particular features of the invention will now be set forth in connection with the detail description of one embodiment of my invention.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of the present specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the garment showing the front flap folded back; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the garment; and Fig. 3 shows the garment in perspective upon the wearer.
The garment consists essentially of a rear body portion 1, provided with trousers or leg portions 2, forming a direct continuation thereof. The front body portion 3 extends down to about the line of the hips of the child where it terminates in a flap 4: which may be folded back as shown inFig. 3. It is to be noted that this flap 4 is apart of the front bodyportion and folds upward. The front trousers portion 5 is provided with a suitable band or binding 6 to which are secured suitable buttons 7 or other fastening devices. The lower end of the flap at is also provided with a suitable band or binding 8 whichhas button holes cut in to cooperate with-the buttons 7 to secure the flap 4 tothe trousers portion 5. The front body portion 3 is stitched to the rear body portion 1 along the side with the exception of the part which forms the flap 4. The front trousers portion 5 is also stitched at Its edges to the back trousers portion 2 to form a closed garment. It is to be noted that the bottom of the trousers or leg portions are closed as shown at 9 (see Figs. 2 and 3,) although this is not essential.
The garment need not necessarily be employed as a sleeping garment and it is my intention to embody this construction in garments to be worn by the child during the daytime. Such garments are usually termed creepers. For creepers, the foot portion is omitted and the trousers leg portions extend only down the limbs of the child, the feet being then covered by suitable stockings.
The back body portion 1 is provided with a seam or opening 11, through which the child enters the garment. This seam or opening is held closed by buttons or other suitable fastening devices 12. The garment is also provided with suitable arm portions 13 and 14.
In use, the flap 4 is secured to the trousers portion 5 by fastening the buttons 7 in the button holes 10 so as to close the front of the garment. The back opening 11 is then unbuttoned and the child is introduced into the garment. The back opening or seam 11 is then" closed. If it is desired to change the diaper 15, the child is laid on its back, as shown in Fig. 3, the flap 4 is un fastened and folded back as shown in Fig. 3, so thataccess may be had to the diaper 15. The flap 4 is made to fold upward to uncover the major portion of the diaper 15 rather than fold downward because the flap would be in the way, if folded downward. That is to say, when the nurse grasps the childs feet or legs in one hand to raise it so that the other hand may be slipped under the childs body to remove the diaper and to insert a fresh one, the flap will not fall down in the Way as it would do if it folded downward. In addition, if the flap folded down it would tend to uncover the childs legs and i to allow chilling of them. The garmentis quite loose and baggy so that the nurse can pass her hand under the childs body and can change the diaper with a minimum of inconvenience to both the child and herself.
i side but unattached along the side, and having a free bottom edge, a
The important result that is-accomplished is keeping the childs legs and the lower part of the body warm while the change of diaper is being made. It is to be understood that other and different seams than the ones that I have shown may be employed in constructing the,
the upper part of the side, but unattached along the lower part of the side, and having a free bottom edge.
2. In combination, a rear body portion, a rear trousers portion secured thereto, a front body portion,-a front trousers portion secured to said rear trousers portion, said front body portion being secured to the rear body portion along the upper part of the the lower part of band across the top of, said front trousers portion and means for fastening the free and band, said bottom edge of the front body portion to said band. 1
3. In combination, a; rear body portion having rear trousers or leg portions, a front body portion extendingonly to about the :hips of the child, said front and back ortions being sewed together at their edges along the topand sides, thelower part of said front bodyportion forming a flap folding upwardly from the trousers portion, said front trousers across the hips and means to fasten said flap and band.
4. In combination, a rear body portion having rear trousers portions forming a continuation thereof, a front body portion extending only to about the hips of the child, said front and back portions being sewed together at their edges along the top and sides, the lower art of said front body portion forming a ap folding upwardly, and a front trousers portion having a band across the hips and means to fasten said flap front and rear trousers portions being closed together at the bottom.
In witness whereof, I hereuntosubscribe my name-this 9th day of December D.
' DOROTHY FLANNIGAN.
