. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 191s.
Application filed January 25, 1915. Serial No. 4,350.
0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM K. JONES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of'VVichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Shirt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved shirt more especially designed for use as an outer shirt for mechanics, workmen and other persons, and arranged to insure proper fitting, to allow the desired freedom of the arms, to prevent tearing at the shoulder seams and at the elbow portion, and to reduce the cost of manufacturing to a minimum.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is niade of integral yoke and sleeve portions which may be made from a single length of shirt material extending in unbroken continuity from the cuff of one sleeve to that of the other sleeve, the lower edge of the yoke portion being secured to the upper edge of the back member of the shirt.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the shirt; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a sideelevation of the two-ply yoke and sleeve portions, the terminal of one ply being shown turned back; Fig. 4: is an enlarged sectional plan view of the shirt on the line 4e4: of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The body A of the shirt is made of front pieces A and a back piece A sewed together at the side edges. A combined yoke B and rear sleeve portions B are formed from a continuous length of shirt material, and the lower edge of the yoke B is secured to the extreme upper edge of the back piece A of the body A, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. To the upper and lower edges of the rear sleeve portions B are sewed the upper and lower edges of front sleeve portions 0 to provide complete sleeves, of which the rear portions B are integral with the yoke B and extend in unbroken continuity from the cufi D of one sleeve to the cuff of the other sleeve, as shown in Fig. 2. It
.is understoodthat the cuffs D are secured-to under the arms of the wearer.
mg the shoulder 1318088, in the manner de-' the outer ends of the united sleeve portions B and C.
A neckband E provided with a collar F is attached to the upper portion of the front body piece'A, and the upper middle portion of the'yoke B, it being understood that the shirt A is open at the front along,
the median line of the front body piece A, and suitable fastening devices G are provided for fastening the front open portions togther. Front shoulder pieces H have their upper edges sewed to the corresponding upper shoulder edges of the yoke B while the inner side edges of the said shoulder pieces H are sewed to the front body piece A, and the extreme upper portions of the said inner side edges will be attached to the neckband E, as would be indicated from Fig. 3. By the arrangement described the inner seam of the shoulder pieces H extends from the neckband to the side seams of the body A a distance below the junction of the said body side seams with the. bottom seams of the sleeve portions B and C. The outer edges of the shoulder pieces H are sewed to the inner edges of the front sleeve portions C to provide shoulder seams which extend from the top sleeve seams to the junction of the body side seams with the bottom sleeve seams, that is, a distance above the junction of the inner shoulder. seams with the body sideseams, as plainly indicated'in Fig. 1. By the arrangement described the sleeves arfe-not-liable to bind scribed the desired shape is given to the shoulder portions of the shirt to insure a proper fitting of the shirt on the wearer. .In practice the combined yoke and sleeve portions B, B are made double thickness or two ply thus strongly reinforcing the back of the shirt as well as the sleeves particularly along the elbow portions to prevent quick wearing out of the shirt when in use. The shoulder pieces H are also preferably made to overlie the body to form two thicknesses to reinforce the shirt across the shoulders to the front thereof.
The shirt shown and described is composed of comparatively few pieces which can be readily sewed together, and a shirt so formed insures long wear and properly fits the user.
Having thus described my invention, I
By fastenclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 7
1. In a shirt including a front and a back, the front being open at its center from the neckband to its lower edge, sleeve cuffs, an integral combined yoke and rear sleeve portions of two ply material and extending in unbroken continuity from one sleeve cuff to the other, front sleeve portions having their upper edges and lower edges attached to the corresponding edges of the rear sleeve portions, and front shoulder pieces independent of the front sleeve por-. tions and attached to the shoulder edges of the yoke to provide continuous shoulder seams from the neck band to the sleeve cuffs,
the said shoulder pieces having their outer side edges attached to the inner edges of the front sleeve portions to provide shoulder seams extending from the top of the shoulders downwardly and outwardly to the bottom seams of the sleeves, said yoke portion secured at its lower edge tothe extreme upper edge of the back of the shirt.
2. In a shirt, a body open at the front and made of front and back members fastened together at the sides, a combined yoke and rear sleeve portionsmade from a single continuous length of shirt material, the yoke portion being attached at its lower edge to the extreme upper edge of the back member, front sleeve portions having their up per and lower edges attached to the corresponding edges of the said rear sleeve portions, sleeve cuffs joined to the ends of the front and rear sleeve portions, the said combined yoke and rear sleeve portions extending in unbroken continuity from one cuff to the other cuff, and front shoulder pieces independent of the front sleeve portions, attached to the shoulder edges of the said yoke to provide continuous shoulder seams from the neck of the yoke to the sleeve cuffs, the said front shoulder pieces having their outer side edges attached to the inner edges of the said front sleeve portions to provide shoulder seams extending from the top of the shoulders to the junction of the inner ends of the bottom seams of the sleeves with the side seams of the body, the inner edges of the said front shoulder pieces being at tached to the front of the body to form seams extending from the neck to the side seams of the body a distance below the said junction of the bottom sleeve seams with the said seams of the body.
3. In a shirt, in combination, a body open at the front and composed of front and back members fastened together at the sides and having arm openings, the back member extending only from the lower end of the arm openings downwardly, its upper edge extending from arm-hole to arm-hole, a combined yoke and rear sleeve portions made from a single continuous length of shirt material, the yoke portion being attached at its lower edge to the extreme upper edge of theback member, front sleeve portions secured at the arnrholes, and to the rear sleeve portions by upper and lower seams, the upper seams connecting the front and rear sleeve portions of each sleeve running from the free end of one sleeve to the free end of the other sleeve.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
