SCISSORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed November 4, 1915. Serial N 0. 59,612.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAKoB GRiiNRoos, a citizen of Russia, residing at Ontonagon, in the county of Ontonagon, in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to scissors and shears, and more particularly to what are commonly called button-hole scissors; having for its objects the provision of a new and novel means for adjusting the relative positions of the blades, thereby controlling the length and relative position of the slit which they cut. Having these and other objects of general design and utility in view, I have illustrated an operative embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved scissors, in their closed position; Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the scissors in open position with their blades extended, and Fig. 5 is a detail of the end of the shear blade supporting the knife blade, showing the latter in unfolded or operative position.
Similar reference characters refer respectively to similar parts throughout the several views.
My scissors consist, primarily, of the usual form of shear-blades 10 and 11, pivotally fastened together at 12 and provided with hand grasps 13 and 14.; a suitable spacing device such as a thumb-screw 15, being interposed therebetween, pivoted to one member 13, and adapted to contact the opposite member 14. A knife blade 16, is pivoted at 17 approximating the outer end of the shear-blade 10, being tensionally held either in its extended or closed position by a leaf spring 18 abutting the same.
The shear-blades 10 and 11 are adjustably joined to their respective handles by means of a guide-rod 19 and screw 20, parallelly projecting therefrom in the plane thereof and entering parallel apertures in the blade; a knurled nut 21, set in an aperture in the blade transverseto the aperture through which passes the screw 20, engages said screw and serves as an adjusting means, whereby the blade is caused to approach or leave the handle upon the rotating of the nut. As a means for locking the blade against reciprocation or adjustment, I provide a leaf spring or pawl 22, secured to the hand grasp and engaging one of a plurality of notches 23 on the edge of the blade.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a new and novel button-hole scissors, the several parts of which being arranged and constructed in such a manner that the same may be cheaply manufactured and at the same time possess advantages which have not heretofore been attained in this art.
lVhat I claim is 1. Scissors comprising a pair of shearblades and handles pivotally connected together, said blades being adjustably secured to their respective handles, means for adjusting said blades comprising a bar protruding from said handle, a screw extending parallel therewith, said members entering apertures in said blade, a nut secured in an aperture in said blade transverse to and engaging said screw, and a spring pawl extending from said hand grasp and engaging one of a plurality of notches in said blade.
2. Scissors comprising a pair of integral shear-blades and handles pivotally connected together, the outer ends of said blades consisting of separate members adjustably secured to the remaining portions of their respective blades, means for adjusting said blades comprising a bar protruding from said handle, a screw extending parallel therewith, said screw and bar entering apertures in said blade, a nut secured in an aperture in said blade transverse to and engaging said screw, and a spring pawl extending from said handle and engaging one of a plurality of notches in said blade.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAKOB GRCNROOS.
IVitnesses:
