G. A. LA FONTAINE. CLIPPER SHEARS. APPLICATION FILED Nov. 2, ISI?.

met
GEORGE A. LA FONTAINE, GF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OE ONE-HALF TO OTTO STEINEN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
CLIPPEE-SHEARS.
Lamina.
Application filed November 2'?, 1917.
To all lwlw/1i it may concern:
Be it known that I, Grenen A. LA FON- TAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clipper-Shears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clipper shears of the character shown and described in my co-pending application, filed J une 12, 1917, Serial Number 174,219; and it has for its principal object to provide improved clipper shears in which the handles or operating members are so positioned relative to the shearing blades that they do not interfere with the free use of said clippers, as is sometimes the case with clippers having the ordinary handles. ln using the ordinary clippers, their handles sometimes engage the shoulders or base of the neck in such a way as to interfere with the most convenient use of the clippers.
It is the object of my improved clipper shears to so construct and position the handles or operating members, that the blades can be very conveniently dipped into any concaved surface by simply turning the hand with a twisting movement of the wrist and forearm.
Another object of my invention is to provide improved clipper shears of the character referred to with double shearing knives of different sizes.
In order to more clearly explain my invention, l have illustrated one practical embodiment thereof on the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 4; is a sectional view through the lower portion thereof, with parts of the handles broken ofi.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the upper blade; and,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the lower blade.
1Broadly considered, my improved clippers are provided with handle or operating members occupying a plane at right angles to the plane of the blades, the gripping portions of said handles constituting T-portions or cross bars at the ends thereof.
Referring now more in detail to the draw- Speceaton of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 8, 1920.
Serial No. 204,795.
ings, 1 designates a body member, provided at one end with spaced hinged lugs 2, between which is pivotally mountedan operating member 3, on the upper end of whiclris a gripping bar 4 provided with a horn 5. On the opposite end of said body 1, is a handle member 6, also provided at its upper end with a cross bar 7, with a horn 8. Slidably seated immediately under said body 1, is a clipper blade 9, provided in'its upper edge with a groove, whereby to give it a sliding, interiitting connection to said body 1. The operating member 3 is provided with an operating finger at 3', which projects through the body 1 and into a recess 9, in the end of said clipper blade 9, whereby as said operating member is rocked on its pivot, said Iclipper blade 9 is moved longi tudinally of said body 1. A downwardly projecting stoppin 10, at the opposite end of the body 1, serves to limit the movement in one direction of said clipper blade 9, said clipper blade being provided with a notch, as at 11, for engaging said pin. Mounted iiatwise against said clipper blade 9, is a liXed clipper blade 12, provided with a hole 18, at one end to receive the pin 10, whereby the said fixed blade is held against movement relative to the clipper blade 9. Said fixed blade 12 is also provided with a hole, le', through which passes a lock pin 15, which also passes through a slot, 16, in the clipper blade 9, and through the body 1, on top of which it is provided with a nut 17. 1n order to eliminate friction between the blades 9 and 12, the meeting surfaces of said blades are slightly eoncaved or hollowed, as at 9l and 12a. A spring 18 is mounted between the handle member 6, and the operating member 3 and normally moves said members apart.
Thus it will be seen that as the gripping bars L1- and 7 are grasped in the hand and moved toward each other, the clipper blade 9 is operated relative to the blade 12, with a shearing action.
The teeth on one side of the clippers are preferably of one size, while those on the opposite side are of a different size, thus providing two sizes of clippers in one tool. rThe arrangement of the handle bars and the positions of the horns thereon, make it possible to readily reverse said clippers in the hand for using either one size or the other', as desired. By removing the nut 17, the
clippers are very readily taken apart for any purpose desired.
I am aware that changes in the details of my invention, as here illustrated, can be made Without departing from the spirit thereof, and I do not, therefore, limit the invention to the particular embodiment thereof here shown for purposes of illustration, except as I maybe limited to the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1.2Clipper'sliears of the character referrcd to comprising a body member provided Withv ay handle member, and an operating member pivotally connected therewith, T-shaped gripping members on said handle and operating members, a pair of shearing blades mounted flatwise together and secured to said body in a plane at right angles to the plane of stem portion of said handle and operating member, and operating connections from said operating member to one of said shearing blades for moving the same flatwise upon the other blade.
2. In a device of the character referred to, a body member provided with a handle member projecting therefrom, a combination handle and operating member ivotally connected in said body member and moving in the plane of said handle member, shearing blades secured to the under side of said body in a plane at substantially right angles to the plane of said handle and operating members, one of said blades being mounted to move atwise upon the other, operating connections from said combination handle and operating member to said movable blade, and T-shaped gripping bars at the upper ends of said handle members, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character referred to, abody, shearing blades mounted flat- Wise one upon the other and connected to said body, T-shaped handle and operating members on said body and having connections for operating said blades, said blades and the stems of said handle and operating members occupying planes substantially at right angles to each other, the cross members bars on the upper ends ofsaid handle and operating members being provided With horns, substantially as described.
Signed at Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, California, this 22nd day of November, 1917.
GEORGE A. LA FONTAINE.
