Description
. 2 Sheets-Sheet 1. J. BRADY. WIRE CUTTER.
(No Model.)
Patented Feb. 6, 1894.
,fnvezzior UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES BRADY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Wl RE-CU-TTER.
:iPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,254, dated February 6, 1894.
Application filed November 9, 1893. Serial No. 490,442- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES BRADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Cutters, of which the following is a Referring to the accompanying drawings which form apart of this specification :Fig-
ure I is a side view of my improved wire cutter. Fig. II is an edge View of the same, partof the handle being broken away. Figs. III and IV are side and edge views of one blade. Figs. V and VI are similar views of the other blade. Figs. VII, VIII and IX are respectively edge, side, and sectional views of one of the cutter jaws. Figs. X and XI are side and edge views of the other cutter jaw.
The two legs 1, 2 of the cutter have usual handles 3 and may have usual elastic stop 4. The legs are fastened together by the ordinary pivot bolt 5. The jaws of the two legs 1, 2 adjacent to said pivot have the forms shown in Figs. VIII and X. While the leg2 is fiat except for the slight bend at 6 where the two legs cross each other, the jaw of leg 1 has an offset 7 of a depth equal to the thickness of the two blades 8, 9 of which the blade 8 is attached to the jaw of leg 1 while the blade 9 is attached to the jaw of leg 2. The cutting edges 10 of the two blades are formed as shown in Figs. III and V so that as they .ive jaws by means of notches 11 on theblades which engage fixed studs or lugs 12 on said jaws. By having a series ofnotches on each blade as shown, a very considerable adjustment of the blades may be effected for the purpose of taking up wear. The distance apart of the adjustment notches is such that the ordinary change in the edge caused by a resharpenin g will be just compensated for by adjusting the blade one notch, so that by such adjustment the edge of the blade is brought back to the same position substantially, that it had in the first place.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A wire cutter having its jaws united by a pivot bolt and movable blades pivoted on said boltindependently of said jaws and having suitable means of adjustment about said bolt, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the cutter jaws, the pivot bolt 5, the blades 8, 9 capable of being rotated about said pivot bolt and having studs and notches adapted to hold them in position for cutting, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the cutter jaws having the studs 12 and one jaw having the OE- set 7, blades 8, 9 occupying said offset and having notches adapted to engage said studs, substantially as set forth.
JAMES BRADY. Witnesses:
HARRY E. KNIGHT, M. V. BIDGOOD.
