To all whom it may concern} p Be it known that I, WILLIAM-H- KREM- k sun, a citizen of the United States, residing gas at Fremont, in the county of Dodge'an State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Oilers for Stoclnof which the following is a specification. ,7 7 This invention relates to an automat c oiler for use in applying medicated liquids to hogs, sheep or cattle for destroying parasites or curing skin dlseases, and has for lts I object, broadly, to provide such a construction that a positive operationmay be effected for applying the liquid forcibly to the body of the animal.
The invention includes a passageway through which the animal may travel, and a door or gate arranged to partly obstruct the passageway, and an ejector member for applying the liquid,.operative by the swing ng movement of the gate when the animal makes contact therewith in the act of moving through the passageway.
The device has been found tobe particularly useful in connection with the raising of hogs and sheep, the application of the liquid being positive in operation since the door or gate may partly obstruct a w'ay5between feeding yards, through which ,the stock will readily pass.
The invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as. illustrated n the accompanying draw ng,
it being understood that changes in form, size, proportion and minor (161551-118 may be made within the'scope of the invention as determined by the appended claims, without sacrificing any of its advantages.

Any suitable conduit may be providedthrough which the liquid may move from the receptacle 26 to the cylinder, the bore of pipe 14, as best shown in Fig. 2, being used for this purpose,

Means are providedfor reciprocating the valve stem while an animal is causing a swinging movement of the gate outwardly when moving through the passageway. An actuating plate 36 is provided, said plate beverse curvature'so that its ends, at the sides of the tubular section .16 maybe disposed somewhat lower than its middle. This plate is mounted midway between its ends upon the tubular section 16 of the gate and suitably secured thereto.- -As best shownin Fig.
6, this plate is provided, toextend upwardly near its curved edge at one side of the tubular section 16 (for convenience called the frontside) with aseries of projections or teeth 37 ,these projections being disposed at suitable distances apart in a curved row concentric with the center of the segment or post 12 which iszthe center of movement for the gate, and said segment is provided with a series of projections or teeth 38, similar to those already described, and disposed in a row concentric with the center of movement of the gate, but somewhat nearer the center than the series of teeth 37 ,and at the opposite 'ornear sidev of the tubular section 16.

The crank 0 of crank shaft 40 is provided with a finger d which is disposed transversely with reference to said crank, the terminal part of said finger d being ,disposed near the lower end and at the front side of the cylinder 27.' Crank 0 of the crank shaft 41 is also provided, to extend transversely therefrom, with a finger 6, its terminal part being disposed at the opposite or rear side of said cylinder.
Numeral 42 indicates a tilting member of substantially inverted U-shape, the end 'of each of its arms being provided with a foot piece'or'bufifer, these being indicated, respectively, at 43 and 43, for engagement with the respective fingers d and 6. At 44, mounted on the threaded end of the valve stem outwardly of the upper end of member 42, is a second nut, by meansof which any upward movement of the tilting member will be communicated to the valve stem 33, the arms of said member 42 sliding in the guide 45 which is secured to the cylinder by suitable keepers '46.
v In operation, a hog or other animal may cause a swinging movement ofthe gate ina manner to cause the arm I) of the crank shaft 41 to engage, in succession, teeth 37 of the plate 36, "and each engagement mentioned -will cause a part rotation of the crank shaft 41 to effect a swinging movement of the finger e which will elevate the tilting memher for lifting the valve from its seat, the
liquid thereupon moving out of the discharge port with considerable force, the weight of the metallic parts, such as members 33,33, 42 and 44 being depended upon for causing a return movement of the valve, forcibly, to its seat for ejecting the liquid from port 31.
Numerals 47 indicate weights with which arms a and b of the crank shafts are provided, so that, after a swinging movement has been eflectedfor one of said arms, by its engagement with a tooth, it will instantly move or swing downwardly to be engaged by the next tooth-of the series. Suitable brace rods 48 are provided which extend between the plate 36 and the tubularsection 19 of the gate,for the purpose of supporting said plate. I
From the description it will be understood that the amount of discharge, while an animal is moving throughthe gate frame or passage way may be increased or diminished, as emay be desired. Member 42, by means of the adjustments mentioned, may be elevated or lowered on the stem 31 to cause, respectively, a decrease or increase of the quantitydischarged; also it will be understood that when the teeth of one series are moving into engagement with oneYof the 13Q arms a or b, the teeth of the other series do not engage either of'the arms, the arrangement being such that operation will be effective for spraying or applying liquid from a stationary nozzle or ejector to different parts of the body of the animal while passing through the gateway. It will be appreciated that if the gate has a rapid swinging movement caused by a 10 rapid movement of the animal, that the intervals of time between the discharges will be correspondingly reduced, so that the discharges of the medicated liquid may be practically applied to different parts of the body of the moving animal.
7 Having described construction of parts, a further explanation relating to operation is not necessary.
l/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In devices for the purpose described,
a gate provided with concentric rows of pro .jections, a receptacle for containing a medicated liquid, a cylindrical casing having an intake port communicating with the receptacle and provided with a discharge port and a valve seat between said ports, a valve normally disposed on the valve seat and provided with a valve-stem, a tilting-memher substantially of inverted U-shape connected with the valve-stem, a pair of shafts each having a part engaging the tiltingmenrber and an arm disposed in the plane of one of the concentric rows of said projections, said gate being adapted to have a swinging movement for moving the projections of one of its concentric rows successively into engagement with the arm of a shaft for causing movements of the tiltingmember to cause movements of the valv upon its seat.
2. Devices for the purpose described, comprising, in combination with a passageway, a gate normally obstructing a part of said 4 passageway, and provided with projections, a cylindrical casing provided with a valve and a discharge port controlled by said valve, a liquid container communicating with the cylindrical casing, a tilting-member for controlling said valve, a pair of crank shafts for controlling the tilting-member, said crank shafts being provided with arms disposed in the plane of the projections of the gate, said gate being adapted to have a swinging movement for moving the projections thereof into engagement with an arm of a crank shaft for actuating said valve. 3. In devices for the purpose described, a vertically disposed gate provided with projections, a cylindrical casing provided with a discharge port, an intake port and a valve seat between said ports, a receptacle for containing a medicated liquid in communication with said intake port of the cylindrical casing, a valve normally disposed'on the valve seat. and having a stem extending outwardly from the cylindrical casing, a tiltingmember disposed stridingly upon the cylindrical casing and connected with the valve stem, a pair .of crank shafts each having a 7c part engaging thetilting-member, each of said crank shafts being. provided with an arm disposed in the plane ofa part of the projections of said gate, said gate being adapted to have a swinging movement: for causing engagement of apart of the projections thereof with the arm of a crank shaft for actuating said valve.

a liquid container communicating with the cylindrical casing, a tilting-member connected'with the valve stem for moving the valve, a crank shaft having a part engaging the tilting-member and having a part adapted to be engaged by the projections of the segmental plate when the gate has a swing ing movement in one direction for actuating the tilting-member, and a second crank shaft having a part adapted to be engaged by the projections of said segmental plate when the gate swings in an opposite direction for actuating the tilting-member.
5. In combination, a I gate mounted to I close a part of a passageway, a plate of seg- 10c mental form carried by the gate and provided with a series of projections and a second series of projections, a cylindrical casing having a discharge port disposed adjacent to the gate and provided with a valve seat, a liquid container communicating with the cylindrical .casing, a valve normally disposed on the valve seat, a tilting-member having a connection with the valve for controlling its movements, a crank shaft connected with the tilting-member and having an arm disposed in the plane of the first named series of projections of said plate, a second crank shaft connected with the tilting-member and having an arm disposed in the plane of the second series of projections of said plate, the operation being that when the gate has swinging movements alternately in opposed directions the projections of said platewill move into engage- 123 ment with the arms of the crank shafts for actuating the tilting member.
6. In combination, a gate provided with projections and mounted to normally close a part of a passageway, a cylindrical casing having a discharge port disposed adjacent to the gate and provided with a valve seat, a liquid container in communication with the cylindrical casing, a valve normally disposed on the valve seat, a tilting-member V V I 1,186,913
