GATE.
Application filed August 20, 1924. Serial No. 733,217.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON IVHITEFORD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Manito, in the county of Mason and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Gate, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to gates of the type in which the gate is adapted to be raised or lowered bodily to allow passage therebeneath when desired.
The general object of my invention is to provide a novel means to elevate the gate characterized by simplicity of construction, and ease of operation for the unfailing rais ing and lowering of the gate as desired.
The nature of my invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate embodying my improved gate raising and lowering means;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal vertical section;

Figure 4 is a horizontal section of the latch means as indicated by the lines 44, Figure 1.
In carrying out my invention in practice the gate 10 may have any approved form, a well-known type of gate being illustrated. Said gate is provided with hinge straps 11 the eyes of which are adapted to engage a downwardly extending hinge pintle 12 and a lower upwardly extending hinge pintle 13.
The hinge pintles 12 and 13 are on a vertically movable standard 14 which is adapted to have guided movement in a fixed tubular guide 15. Said tubular guide 15 has a vertical slot 16 and the lower hinge pintle 13 has a shank 113 extending through said slot and into the standard 14. The upper hinge pintle 12 has a horizontal shank 112 disposed above the tube 15 and in fixed relation to the standard 14.
The standard 14 has a vertical rack 17 formed thereon at the slot 16. Meshing with the rack 17 is a pinion 18 which extends through the slot 16, said pinion being fixed on a shaft 19 having a crank handle 119 or other suitable means for turning the shaft. The shaft 19 has bearings in cheeks 20 of a bracket 120 rigid on the tube 15. Pivoted on the bracket 120 is a vertically disposed pawl 21 pressed by a spring 22 to normally tend to engage the teeth of the pinion 18 for holding the standard 14 in a given adjusted position. Since the hinged pintles 12 and 13 are carried by the standard 14, the raising and lowering of said standard, it will be readily understood, will serve to raise and lower the gate 10.
In the illustrated example the tubular guide 15 is secured to the adjacent gate post 110 by means of a collar 23 in fixed relation to said gate post and in fixed relation to the upper end of the guide tube 15. The guide tube 15 at its lower end is received in a socket 24 fast on the post 110.
Any suitable latch means may be employed, there being shown a reciprocating latch bar 25 having a slot 27 therein through which a transverse pin 28 in the gate extends. Said latch bar is adapted to be engaged at its outer end in a slot 26 in the adjacent gate post 210.
I would state in conclusion that While the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a gate and gate raising assemblage, a gate post, a tubular vertical iide in fixed relation to said post, a standard movable vertically in said guide and projecting above the upper end thereof, said guide tube having a vertical slot and said standard having a vertical rack at said slot, a pinion extending through said slot and engaging said rack, a shaft on which said pinion 1s fixed, a bracket rigid on said tubular guide, said bracket having bearings in which said shaft turns, a spring-pressed pawl pivoted on said bracket and normally tending to engage said pinion to hold the standard in a given position, a downwardly directed hinge pintle having a shank above said guide tube and rigid with said standard, and an upwardly extending pintle extending through said slot of the guide and rigid With said standard at the lower end of the latter, said hinge pint-les adapted to receive hinge elements.
2. In a gate raising device, a vertically slotted tubular guide, means to fixedly secure said guide to a gate post, a standard vertically movable in said guide and extending above the top thereof, a rack on said standard, a pinion engaging said rack, a shaft carrying said pinion, bearings for said shaft, said bearings rigid With said tube, and hinge elements carried by the standard.
