To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISRAEL BENJAMINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and usefnlAdjust-able Stand, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable stands used for dressmakers figures, and the objects of my improvement are: first to produce an adjustable stand which can be lengthened or shortened without stooping down; second to enable the stand to be lengthened without stepping upon any treadle or foot lever and without engaging any other mechanism except lifting the figure or any other object supported by the stand; third, to have the above stand simple, durable and inexpensive. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in whichl igin-e 1 is a longitudinal section in a plane passing through line C. D. of Fig. 2, which is a plan or top view of the stand, and E F of Fig. 3, which is a side view or" the upper part of the stand in a plane at right angles to E F.

and supporting a tube or pipe 3 whose lower end is secured to said pedestal 1; is a special fitting or crown shown as secured to the upper end of the said tube3 and which has an opening through which passes a rod 5, carrying the shown, and a key 6 in-sliding contact with one side of the said opening in the said fitting 4: along an inclined plane; 7 is a reach rod secured at its upper end to the said key 6 and having near its lower end a pin or pins 8 acting as trunnions and engaged by the forked end of a lever 9 supported by a pin 11 journaled into a bracket 10.
13 is a helical spring shown in Fig. 1 as connected at one end to an eye formed in the lower end of the said rod 7 and at the other end to a horizontal bar 14: supported at the ends by the lugsl5 in the legs 2 of the said pedestal.

The bases of the said grooves are inclined planes; and rollers 20 are placed in the said grooves 19 in contact with the said inclined planes on one side, and the said rod 5 on the other side. 21 are cornices at the upper sides-of the said grooves 19 designed to restrict the upward travel of the said rollers 20.
The operation of my device is as follows: The spring 13 pulling on the rod 7 will tend to jam the key 6 against the rod 5 and the latter against the opposite side of the open ing in the fitting t. To lift the rod 5 in the form of the device shown in Fig. 1, it
will not be necessary to step upon any treadle or to engage any other mechanism, the rollers 20 simply receding up the inclined planes at the bases of the grooves 19 and allowing the said rod 5 to pass upward before the key 6 will have time to be actuated by the rod 7 and the spring 13: when releasing the rod 5, the rollers 20 will turn on the inclined planes at the bases of the said grooves 19 until they will be jammed against the rod 5, and they will then keep it from descending any farther. This action of the rollers will be almost instantaneous, and prompter than would be the action of any pawls and racks, for which these rollers and inclined planes are designed to act as substitutes. To permit the rod 5 to descend it will be necessary to step upon the outer end of the foot lever or treadlc 9 thereby lifting the rod 7 and key 6 and releasing the rod 5.
Numerous modifications could be made in the shape and general arrangement of the parts of-Iny stand within the scope of my invention; I, therefore, do not restrict myself to the exact form of the device or of any of its parts as shown by the drawings.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
1. In an adjustable stand for figures a column carrying a fitting having averticalopening, an inclined plane at one side of said, opening,a key in sliding contact with said inclined plane, sets of transverse and receding grooves in the sides of said key and of said opening facing each other, rollers in said grooves, means for keeping said rollers in place, a movable post held inadjustable' position by and between said rollers I column carrying a fitting having a vertical opening, an inclined plane at one side of said opening, a key in sliding contact with said inclined plane, sets of transverse and receding groovesin the sides of said key and of said opening facing each other, rollers in said grooves, side plates attached to said fi ting and adapted to keep said rollers in place, a movable post held in adjustablepd sition by and between said rollers and means for actuating said key.
In an adjustable stand for figures a column carrying a fitting having a vertical opening, an inclined plane at one side of said opening, a key in sliding contact with said inclined plane, sets of transverse and receding grooves in the sides of said key and of said opening facing each other, rollers in said grooves, a movable post held in adjustable position by and between said rollers, a reach rod secured to said key, a tensile sprin pulling on said reach rod downwardly and a foot lever adapted to'lift the same.
4-. In an adjustable stand for fi ures a pedestal, a hollow column supported by it and carrying a fitting having a vertical opening, an inclined plane at one side of said opening, a key in sliding contact with said inclined plane, sets of transverse and receding grooves in the sides of the key and of the opening facing each other, rollers in said grooves, a movable post held in adjustable position by and between said rollers, a reach rod secured to said key, a bar secured to said pedestal, a tensile spring having one end attached to said bar and the other end pulling on said reach rod downwardly and a foot lever adapted to lift said reach rod.
