Description

E. B. PATTERSON.
PILL MAKING DEVICE.
(No Model.)
Patented Maj 27 n m. M 3 7 m i 1 EDWVARD B. PATTERSON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PILL-MAKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,258, dated May 27, 1884. Application filed March 5, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. PATTER- sON, of Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pill-Making Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mechanism to be employed in the manufacture of pills.
It has hitherto been the practice in the manufacture of pills to employ a flat bed of the proper size, across one end of which was provided a series of semicircular recesses or corrugations, with a hand-tool fiat upon one side, while upon the other it was provided with a similar series of semicircular recesses or corrugations, so arranged that when in use the corrugations of the bed were coincident to the corrugations upon the hand-tool, and the recess thus formed was circular. The mass from which the pills were made was rolled upon the flat bed by the use of the flat side of the hand-tool into what is technically termed pipes, and as it is necessary that the pills should be of equal size and weight, and easily rolled into the round form from the pipes, the size of the latter is required to equal in diameter the area of the cylindrical recess formed by the juxtaposition of the corrugations of the bed and hand-tool when in place; hence the size of the pipes is of importance, and hithertoit has been the practice to gage them by means of calipers, which is a slow process, and, unless care is used, somewhat uncertaim It is to remedy this defeet in the process of making pills that is the object of my invention, which is so constructed that adjustable guideways are employed, by means of which, without difficulty, accuracy is obtained in the size of the pipes, and by adjusting the guideways different sizes, as may be required, are readily manufactured.
Figure l is a perspective View of the ordinary bed and corrugations provided with my improvement, shown as in position for'making the smallest size pills, and in dotted lines for the largest size, the intermediate sizes being obtained by the proper adjustment between these two extremes. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the hand-tool.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the fiat bed, provided with a series of semicircular corrugations, B. Each side of the bed is provided with an inclined way, 0, the lower point of which is at the front of the bed, and extending on parallel lines upward to the rear of such bed. Guideways D are provided, the upper edges of which are parallel to the plane of the flat bed, while the lower edges of the same are upon inclined planes of the same inclination as those of the inclined ways upon which such guideways run. A setscrew, E,'entering the front end of the bed and passing through the cross-tie at the front end of the guideways, affords the means for adjusting the position of the latter. Of course, any other mechanical and known device for effecting this adjustment would come within the spirit of my invention.
From the above description the advantages to be derived from the use of my improvement are so obvious that a further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as myinvention is l. The bed of a pill-making device, provided with inclined ways upon which guideways can be adjusted to varying heights with relation to such bed, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the bed of a pillmaking device, provided with inclined ways upon its sides, the guide-bars herein described, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. In combination with the bed and guideways of apill-mal ing device, constructed substantially as described, means for adjusting said guideways with relation to the plane of the bed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
EDWVARD B. PATTERSON.
