To all to from it may concern Be it known that I, OLAVIS O. VIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bear River, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates primarily to permutation padlocks, and has particular reference to permutation or keyless padlocks.

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application. 7
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which like characters of reference designate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an improved embodiment of the padlock, parts being broken away to show the shackle in locked position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the shackle in unlocked position. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the padlock as a whole. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of the carriage and dial. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the carriage with the dials and tumblers positioned therein. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan of the looking bolt and tumbler plate. Fig. 7 is an elevation of one of the dials and the disk carried by the same.
Proceeding now with the description of the drawings, it will be seen that the padlock is of the customary appearance and consists mainly of the usual inclosing body portion 10 here illustrated as of elongated shape with rounded corners provided with the side walls 11 and the integral top plate 12, the latter being suitably apertured adjacent each extremity to provide for the pivoting of the shackle 13 between ears 141 formed on the body casing and to also provide for the entrant or looking end 15 of ,the shackle which is suitably cut away as at 16 to provide for the entrance and retention of the longitudinally slidable locking bolt 17.
A removable carriage 18 is adapted to close the lower open end of the casing 10 and to serve as the support for the locking bolt 17 in order that the latter may slidably operate in conjunction with the permutation disks and tumbler disks also revolubly supported by the carriage 18. As clearly shown in Fig. 5, this carriage has formed in one end the beveled recess 19 in order to provide a space for the leaf spring 20 which as shown in Fig. 2 is secured to the wall 11 at the same end of the casing 10 to which the shackle 13 is pivoted, said spring acting in conjunction with the cut out portion 21 formed in the locking bolt 17 and normally tending to hold said locking bolt outwardly in the position illustrated in this figure. The sides of the carriage 18 are also cut away for a short space inwardly to provide working recesses for the permutation dials and tumbler disks 22 and 23 respectively, each of the latter being secured concentrically to one of the former by any suitable means such as the pin or rivet 2 1 and each pair of such dials being revolubly mounted upon the integral pivot 25 of the carriage 18 in such manner that while the smaller tumbler disk is retained wholly within the recess 19' the larger permutation dial projects through the opening 26 formed in the body of the carriage 18 and communicating with the larger recess so as to render manual operation of these permutation disks easy of accomplishment.
Both the permutation dials and the tumbler disks are formed with suitable indentations 27 and 28 respectively which answer the purpose of ratchet teeth and both dials and disks being formed with the comparatively larger indentations 29 and 30 respectively which serve a purpose to be hereinafter more an described. It will be un derstood in this connection that the pairs of disks mounted on opposite sides of the carriage 18 in their respective recesses are loosely positioned upon thepivot pin in order to be readily removable therefrom of these fi ures is adapted to slide upon the reduced top 33 of the carriage 18, to abut the shoulder 34 formed by the raised portion 7 35 of said top upon which the locking bolt,

From the foregoing detailed description,
it will be understood that the operation of the improved permutation padlock is as follows: With the device in operative assembled position as illustrated in Fig. 1 all that remains to be done'in order to release the locked shackle is so to rotate the permutation dials 22 as to :bring the larger indentations 30 of the'tu'mbler disks into the posi tion illustrated in 2, such rotation being" aided by the notches or indentations 27 of the permutation dials acting in conjunction wlth a groove 37 or other indlcatlng mark which is preferably positioned as shown in Fig. 8 upon the bottom of the carriage 18,
the larger indentations 29 of these dials serving as the initial points from which to count the predetermined number of notches or half notches which must be turned either to the right'or left from the indicating mark 37 which will efi'ect the similar and parallel position of the large indentations 30 formed in the tumbler disks which are rotated with the dials'in order to allow the tension of the springQO to draw the locking bolt 17 outwardly of the casing 10 and consequently withdraw it f-rom'its locking position in the cut out portion 16'of the shackle, such withdrawing movement of the bolt it will be readily understood being permitted by the entrance of the winged portions 36 of the tumbler plate which had hitherto resisted such movementintothe large notches 30 of the tumbler disks which as above set forth 1 are properly positioned to receive the and arrangement of elements as constitute the preferred embodiment of my invention, I desire to emphasize the'fact that Imay make such minor changes in the matters of proportion and degree, in later -adaptations of my device as shall not alter the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a permutation pad look, a casing, a
pivoted shackle, a locking bolt for said shackle, a plurality of revoluble dials, means for supporting said dials, a tumbler plate carried by said bolt and having wing por tions, a tumbler disk carried by each dial and provided with a recess to receive one of the wing portions of said tumbler plate when in one position, and means for forcing said bolt outwardly and moving said wing portions into said recesses.
2. In a permutation lock, a casing, a carriage removably positioned in said casing, permutation dials pivotally mounted upon said carriage, tumbler disks concentrically mounted with each of said dials, a spring is tained locking bolt slidable between said dials, and a tumbler plate normally abutting said tumbler disks to prevent withdrawal of said locking bolt. 7 a V 3. The combination of a slidable locking bolt, resilient means normally tending to withdraw said bolt, revoluble permutation dials to either side of said bolt, tumbler disks revoluble with said permutation dials, and means carried by said bolt to abut the peripheries of said tumbler disks against the action of said resilient means.

plate carried by said locking bolt and provided with opposite wing portions, a tumbler disk carried by each dial and adapted to rotate with the same, said dials having indicating notches upon their peripheries, said disks having corresponding recesses in their peripheries to receive the wing portions of said plate, and means for forcing said tumbler outwardly to release said shackle when said recessesare opposite said wing portions.
8. In a permutation pad look, a casing, a pivoted shackle carried by said casing, a locking bolt for said shackle, a supporting member within said casing, a pair of revoluble dials mounted on said supporting member, a tumbler disk upon the inner face of each dial, said locking bolt being movable between said disks, a plate carried by said bolt and having opposite extensions engaged with the periphery of said disks, recesses in the peripheries of said disks to receive said opposite extensions, and means for forcing outwardly said bolt when said recesses are opposite said extensions.
