Description

A.' H. COLSON.
KNIFE HOLDER. APPLICATIQN FILED MAR. 2,1914.
ALONZO H. COLE'vON, 0F WAKEFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
KNIFE-HOLDER.
-Speciieation of Letters Patent.
Application filed Marcil 2, 1914. Serial No. 822,055.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALONZO H. CoLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of lVakeield, in the county of Middlesexand Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Knife-Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to holders for implements such as butchers knives, tools, etc., and is intended to provide for maintaining such implements in sanitary condition by protecting them from'dust and dirt.
The holder embodies features of construction permitting it to be cleaned readily and preferably to inclose substantially completely those parts of the implements which are desired to be protected when not in use.
The character of the invention may be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings which show one illustrative embodi'ment which has been found practicable for such purposes as those referred to.
In the drawings: Figure l shows a top view of one form of my invention; Fig. 2 shows a front view of the same with a part of the front cover cut away; Fig. 3 shows the position of the parts when the case is closed and ready for the reception of the implements which it is intended to hold; Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig.2 showing the front turned down; and Fig. 5 shows a modified form of a part of the device.
The form of this invention which is illustratively shown in the drawings hereof, is suitable for holding case knives, butchers knives, or other implements, and has advantages amongwhich are the ease with which the holder may be flushed out or washed; the complete protection from dust and dirt which the case provides for the implements which are held within it; and others which will be readily observed.
a are screws or bolts whereby the back frame d, d may be secured to the wall or other support by passing said screws or bolts through suitably disposed openings in said back frame, as best shown in Figs'. 2 and 3. The back framework of the device, best shown in Fig. 2, may consist merely of sideribs d connected at the top by the top-board al. This back frame-work is surmounted by a bar e which may be attached thereto by any well-known means, as rivets or screws I), the bar e being so constructed that depressions along. its face serve as portions of openings which are made complete upon the closing of the front hinged part f which, 1n turn, is surmounted by a bar g having corresponding depressions which register with the depressions in the bar e, thus forming the openings into which may be thrust the objects desired to be held. Said front part or cover f may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably of a sheet metal such as copper, and preferably is supported upon a framework l1., which may be constructed similarly to the back frame al, d already described. I prefer the cover f so formed that its edges bend backward, as at m, in planes perpendicular to that of its front surface with the result that when the front partis closed the implements which may have been inserted in the openings in the top above described, will be well inclosed and protected from dust, etc., to which they would otherwise be exposed.
The'front cover f, is attached, as by screws or rivets, to the end ribs h, and top piece n, of the front frame the ribs it being hinged at z' to the lower ends of the back frame d. When the front part f is closed, so that the bars e and g are contiguous, it may be held in place by any suitable arrangement such as a bolt c and button j, said bolt c passing through parts rl and a, as best shown in Fig. 4.
The device may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit of the invention; for example, as is shown in Fig. 5 where an intermediate top bar c, may be inserted between the bars g and e, and preferably hinged to the latter as in Z in such a way as to turn'outward, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5. Such a modilication renders it possible for a greater -number of implements to be inserted in the holder.
The bottom of the case or holder above described is open, asshown in Figs. 3 and 4, which permits of easy cleaning.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details of construction and organization of the illustrative embodiment shown in the drawing; on the Patented J une 13, 1916.
ber to receive implements; means supporting p said Wall and permitting movement thereof to open said chamber; and implement-supporting means with openings to hold the implements in said chamber.
2. A holder of the character described comprising, in combination, a frame; a pro-y tecting Wall coperating with said frame to provide an implement-receiving chamber, the bottom of said chamber being substantially open; means connecting said Wall and frame and permitting movement of said wall to open said chamber; and implementsupporting means provided by coperating parts of said Wall and frame. 3. A holder of .the character described, comprising in combination, a frame; a protecting wall hinged to the frame; and iminseae l 4. A holder of the character described comprising, in combination, a frame; a removable protecting Wall providing a chainber to receive the implements; openings into said chamber permitting introduction of and serving to support the implements; and an additional opening to said chamber permitting the same to be readily7 flushed.
5. A holder of the character described, comprising in combination a frame, means for attaching said frame to a substantially vertical surface, a protecting Wall hinged to said frame, and an implement supporting means formed by closing said Wall against said frame.
In testimony whereof, l have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
