Abstract

A knife-rack device comprises a back-plate (1) carrying a slotted bar (2) and two transparent covers (6,7) hinged to the bar on opposite sides thereof so as, when closed, to cover the handles (5) and blades (4) respectively of knives supported in the rack with their blades extending through the slot and their handles (5) resting on the bar (2). The rack may be hung on a wall or may be supported on a flat surface either with the aid of a hinged back rest (11) or in an accompanying base with seats for a set of supplementary knives. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An implement rack The present invention relates to knife-racks and its object is to provide a knife-rack device which can protect the knives carried by the rack itself effectively against dust while allowing the knives to be fully visible.
In order to achieve the said objects, the knife-rack device which is the subject of the present invention comprises, in combination: - a backplate, - a crossbar supported by the backplate and having at least one slot parallel to the backplate; each slot being adapted to be traversed by the blade of a knife the handle whereof rests on the crossbar, - a first transparent dish-shaped cover hinged to the crossbar and adapted to cover the knife handle or handles in its closed condition, - a second transparent, dish-shaped cover hinged to the crossbar and arranged to cover the knife blades in its closed condition.
Further characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the description which follows with reference to the appended drawings, provided purely by way of non-limiting example, in which: Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a knife-rack, Figure 2 is a section taken on the line Il-Il of Figure 1, Figure 3 illustrates the knife-rack supported by a flat surface, Figure 4 illustrates the knife-rack supported by a base arranged to carry other knives and, Figure 5 is a cross-section taken on the line V-V of Figure 4.
As illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, a backplate indicated 1 carries a crossbar 2 on one face, the crossbar having one or more slots 3 parallel to the backplate.
Each slot 3 is traversed by the blade 4 of a knife the handle 5 whereof rests on the crossbar.
A transparent, dish-shaped cover 6 is articulated about pins 8 to one side of the crossbar and, in its closed position, covers the handles 5 of the knives carried by the device.
A second transparent, dish-shaped cover 7 is articulated to the other side of the crossbar 2 about pins 8 and, in its closed condition, covers the knife blades 4.
In order to achieve an effective dust-tight seal, the edges of the two covers 6 and 7 engage in corresponding grooves 9 in the backplate 1 in their closed conditions.
When, as in the embodiment illustrated, the backplate 1 is moulded from plastics material together with the crossbar 2, the backplate has a projection la for supporting the knife blades 4 in a position parallel to the plate 1.
Obviously the backplate and the crossbar may be made wholly or partly from other materials, such as wood, metal or laminated plastics, or even from a combination of these materials.
The upper part of the backplate 1 has holes 10 for receiving screws or other means for fixing the knife-rack to a vertical wall.
A support member 11 is set into the opposite face of the backplate 1 from that to which the covers 6 and 7 are attached, the support member being articulated about a pin 12. This member may be used to support the knife-rack in an inclined position on a horizontal surface as shown in Figure 3.
In the embodiment illustrated, since the knives have blades 4 of different lengths, the cover 7 has an essentially right-angled trapezoidal profile instead of a rectangular shape like the cover 6.
In order to support the knife-rack in a vertical condition on a flat surface, a base 13, illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, is provided.
The base has a seat 14 for receiving that part of the knife-rack which contains the knife blades.
The upper part 13a of the base 13 has additional seats, indicated 15, for receiving the blades of a plurality of supplementary knives 16 the handles whereof rest on the said upper part of the base.
The base 13 also has a transparent wall 17 in its front face for allowing the blades of the supplementary knives 16 contained therein to be seen.
Preferably the transparent wall 17 is removable and, for this purpose, it may be slidable in guides formed in the base 13 or may be snap-engageable in a corresponding aperture in the base itself.
