Description
JOHN LAWSON.
Improvement in Washing Machines .No. 118,618.
Patented Aug.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LAWSON, OF HUMBOLDT, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,618, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LAWSON, of Humboldt, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and
Fig. 2 is a plan View with the cover removed.
This invention relates to a cylindrical tub supported in a horizontal position upon legs, the upper half of the tub being removable and serving as a cover, the lower half being lined with a corrugated zinc plate, and a semi-cylindric rubber (corrugated) being placed within the tub, supported upon an axis, and vibratory with respect to the corrugated bottom.
Referring to the drawing, a. is the lower half of the cylindrical tub; I), the upper removable half or cover of the same; 0, the corrugated lining of the tub, forming a concave wash-board; d, a shaft placed centrally crosswise of the tub a and supported on the sides of the same. 6 are wooden semicircular plates attached at their upper sides to the shaft d, within the tub a, and at a suitable distance apart. fis a corrugated metal plate or rubber attached to the peripheries of the plates 6, at a suflicient interval from the wash-board c to admit clothes between them. 9 are arms extending from the ends of the shaft cl. h is a handlc connecting the ends of the arms g.
The shaft and rubber can be removed from the tub a, after taking ofl the top b, to admit clothes to the tub, after which the rubber and cover are replaced and the rubber vibrated by means of the handle, thus subjecting the clothes to friction between the rubber and wash-board. The top is kept in place while on the tub by means of flanges i at the ends of the latter, and flanges j at the sides of the latter, between which flanges the top sits.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the tub (I, flanges i j, top b, wash-board 0, rubber f, sides 0, shaft d, arms 5 and handle h, as specified.
- JOHN LAWSON.
