Description

gm UWA la! PATENT OFFICE HORACE LARDEN RICHARDSON, OF LYNDON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming vpart of Letters Patent No. 116,488, dated June 27, 187.1.
To all whom t 'may concer/n:
Be it known that I, HORACE LARDEN RICH- ARDSON, of Lyndon, in the county of Vihitesides and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vashiug-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following.;- to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure 1 represents a plan View of my im proved Washingmaehine, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section th ereof taken through the dotted lille a: w of Fig.y l.
Similar letters of reference in the two figures refer to like parts.
This invention has reference to an improvement in washing-machines; and it consist-s of a cylindrical or other suitablyshaped vessel, within which the clothes or other articles to be'washed are deposited, supplied with a series of buckets, formed by constructing it with angular protruding projections or ribs, and to which the water or steam is admitted through apertures so located in the said ribs as that they shall be at a point below the apeXes thereof, whereby the water or steam may enter the said buckets, while the articles being washed are brought in contact with and supported upon the said ribs, substantially as hereinafter more fully explained and claimed.
To enable others to make and use in yin vention, I will proceed to describe it.
A in the annexed drawing refers to a receptacle made in the form of an ordinary Wash-boiler, and in Wh ich the Water for Washing is placed and heated. This receptacle or boiler is supplied with handles and a lid or cover, a., which is constructed with a concave recess upon its lower side, formed by giving it the curvilinear shape exhibited in Fig. 2. To this lid is also attached a handle. B refers to a vessel for the reception of the clothes or other articles to be Washed, which are inserted therein through an opening covered by the door or lid b. This vessel is made ofa cylindrical shape, but may be made of any other suitable shape, if desired, and is supplied with a series of buckets, b1 b1, formed by constructing it with angular ribs or projections b2 b2, protruding Within said cylinder or vessel a suitable distance, (see Fig. 2,) and placed at proper distances apart. The apexes or tops of these ribs or projections are rounded, so as to present a smooth surface to the clothes or articles being washed which come in contact therewith. b3 b3 are apertures made in the angular ribs b2 b2 at a point below their apexes, for the purpose of admitting the water or steam aris in g from the latter in the boiler A to the buckets b1 b1 of the cylinder, from which it is carried throughout the said cylinder by the revolving of the same when the clothes are being washed. By rounding the a-pexes of the ribs b2 b2, or giving them a smooth surface, the articles being washed, in falling thereupon, will be prevented from being torn or otherwise damaged; and by placing the apertures b3 b3 in said ribs, as above stated, the same will be relieved from contact therewith, and the said articles and the water and steam,'in consequence thereof, permitted to freely and at all times enter or have access to the buckets b1 b1. The cylinder or vessel B is hung, by means of a shaft, upon perforated bearing-plates secured to the inner sides of the receptacle or boiler A, the said shaft being made to protrude through one side ofthe said boiler, and supplied with a crank or handle for operating or revolving the said cylinder. Secured to the outside ofthe vessel A, opposite the inner bearing-plates of the sha-ft of the cylinder B, are convex disks c c, through one of which the said shaft passes, the objectot' said disks being to strengthen the sides of the said boiler at the points of bearing of the cylinder-shaft. A
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, 1s-
The cylinder B, constructed as described-that is to say, supplied with the buckets b1 b1 and angular ribs or projections b2 b2, having the side apertures b3 b3, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of April, 1871, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HORACE LARDEN RICHARDSON.
