IMPROVEMENT lN BABY-JUMPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,599, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. FAULKS, of Glasgow, in the county of Howard and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Baby-Jumper; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a central vertical longitudinal section of my jumper.
This invention relates to baby-jumpers; and it consists of an improved device having an adjustable support that can be easily and securely fixed between the ceiling and the floor of any room or porch, and also having an improved and adjustable jumper adapted to children of diiferent ages and weights, the whole being neat in appearance, conveniently portable, and admirably adapted to the purpose intended.
The uprights A and A are connected by two metallic slides, a and a", so as to be adjustable to thevarious heights of ceilings above the floors. The uprights have a base, B, and a cap, B, to rest respectively on the floor and against the ceiling of a room or porch. The cap B may be provided with an annular ring of rubber, b, to protect the ceiling from being scratched. The slide 0, having a set-screw, c, and a vertical screw, 0, is for the support of the upright A after it is placed against the ceiling, the slide being then so placed and fixed by the set-screw c as to bring the vertical screw 0 up against the lower end of the upright A, which may then be pressed by the force of the screw 0 firmly against the ceiling, and the base B and the cap B being coniparatively broad the support cannot fall. The thimble'shaped slide (1 is supported on the upright A by two set-screws, d and d, and at its lower end it has an annular shoulder, e, for the support of the ring 0, which is connected to the ring 0 by the strip f, in the face of which is formed an open dovetailed groove, f, for the reception of the lower end of the spring G, which is of the best of spring-steel. The strips f connecting the rings 6 and 6 may be more than one in number, as more than one spring may be desired, and the slide, and consequently the spring or springs, may be adjusted at any desired height from the floor by the set-screws d and c. The slide 9 on the spring is made adjustable by a set-screw, g, to adapt the spring to children of different ages and weights, by having the jumper supported on the spring nearer or further from its base. The slide 9 is connected by a pivoted swinging link, h, to a swivel-link, It, to which the strap i, formed as shown, is buckled, so that the seat may be raised or lowered by adjusting the strap, and, at the same time, be allowed to turn around and to swing without obstruction or derangement. The strap supports at its lower end a cross-piece, k, in the form represented, to the ends of which are connected in a suitable way the straps k and 7a, and to the lower ends of these straps are buttons or supports for connecting a walking-belt, I, or a seat, I, as the case may be. The walking-belt is in the general form shown, being made adjustable before and behind by buttons or otherwise, and the belt connected to the seat is constructed in a like adjustable manner. The walking-belt and the seat are thus adapted to children of different sizes, and may be used alternately as walking or other exercise is desired. The seat 1 is supported by straps I 1, about four in number, and is constructed in any suitable manner, as in the form shown.
I claim as my invention 1. As a support for a baby-jumper, the adjustable upright A A secured rigidly to its broad cap and foot, and provided with the clamp-slide c and the adjustable screw 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the rectangular uprights A A, of the adjustable pivot (I, rotating sleeve 0 a, spring Gr, adjustable swivel-clamp g h, and baby-jumper or belt is I, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN P. FAULKS.
