GEORGE SEARS, 0F ONSLOW, IOWA.
PUNCH AND SHEAR ING MACHINE.
Application filed March 22, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE SEARs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Onslow, in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Punch and Shearing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this'application is adapted to be employed for cutting sheets of metal, for severing round bars and for punching purposes.
The invention aims to provide novel means for actuating the movable jaw, to improve the punch and stripper mechanism and, generally, to improve and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that there is provided a supporting structure in cluding a standard 1 upstanding from a base 2. On the upper end of the standard 1 there is formed an arcuate rack 3. Projecting from the standard 1 relatively near to the base 2 is a fixed arm 4. A fixed jaw 5 also projects from the standard 1. A blade 6 is secured to the jaw 5 by means of attaching elements 7. The arm 4 carries an anvil 8 adapted to coiiperate with a punch to be described hereinafter. Projecting laterally from the arm 4 is a lug 9 through which passes an eye bolt 10 provided atits lower end with a nut 11 coacting with the lug. Held at one end by the eye bolt 10 and at its other end mounted in a lug 14 on the standard 1 is a transverse pivot element 12.
Mounted to swing on the pivot element 12 is a movable jaw 15 provided with an upstanding arm 16. A blade 17 is attached to the jaw 15 by means of securing elements 18 and is adapted to coact with the blade 6 Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 16,224.
for cutting strips or sheets of metal. On one side of the movable jaw 15 is formed a lug 20 receiving and holding one end of a loopshaped depending arm 19, the other end of which is free, and the arm being resilient. The function of the arm 19 is to hold a strip or sheet of metal down on the edge of the fixed blade 6 while the sheet or strip is being cut by the blade 17 on the movable jaw 15, the arm 19 of course yielding during such an operation.
A stripper in the, form of a block 21 is detachably seated in the jaw 5 and is held thereto by resilient clips 22 which are attached to the jaw 5 by means of securing elements 23. In the stripper 21 reciprocates with necessary freedom a punch 24 adapted to coact with the anvil 8. The upper end of the punch 24 is received in a lug 25 formed on the side face of the'movable jaw 15, the upper end of the punch being consuch a manner that the punch will operate properly when the jaw 15 is depressed. The punch 24 coacts with the anvil 8 in forming a hole in the strip or sheet of metal and an obvious function of the stripper 21 is to per mit a withdrawal of the punch from the strip or sheet of metal when the jaw 15 and the punch are elevated. In the movable jaw 15 there is formed a hole 27 adapted to move into and out of registration with a hole 28 formed in the standard 1. The holes 27 and 28 constitute a means for shearing off bars of metal when the. jaw '15 is rocked on its fulcrum 12. v
A link 29 is pivotally connected to the rear, upper end of the arm 16 of the movable jaw 15 and in the upper end of the link 29 is journaled a shaft having squared portions 30. Upon one of the squared portions 30 of the shaft is held a pinion 31 adapted to mesh into the rack 3. Heads 32 are mounted on the squared portions 30 of the shaft and the heads comprise a plurality of arms 33 having sockets 34, in any one of which may be inserted an operating lever (notshown). 7
When a lever is inserted into one of the arms 33, the shaft will be rotated, the pinion 31 being rotated also and traversing the arcuate rack 3. As the shaft is rotated, and as, the pinion moves forwardly along the Patented June 6,1916. I
and having its forward end attached to the movable jaw, the arm being located to one side of the movable jaw and being adapted to coact with the material operated upon by the jaws to hold the material on the fixed jaw, the inner end of the arm being free; and means for operating the movable jaw.
2. In a device of the class described, a supporting structure provided with an outstanding fixed jaw and provided with an ofiset lug located below the fixed jaw; an eye bolt mounted in the lug; a nut on the eye bolt and coacting with the lug; a pivot element mounted in the eye bolt and in the supporting structure; a movable jaw adapted to coact with the fixed jaw and supported on the pivot element; means for operating the movable jaw; and a loop-shaped arm secured at its outer end to the movable jaw, the arm being resilient and being extended below the movable jaw, the inner end of the arm being free and being upwardly and rearwardly extended to clear the upper end of the eye bolt and the pivot element.
3. In a device of the class described, a supporting structure provided with an outstanding fixed jaw and provided with an outstanding arm located below the fixed j aw; an anvil carried by the arm; a stripper on the fixed jaw; a punch slidable in the stripper and adapted to coact withthe anvil; a movable jaw adapted to coact with the fixed jaw and pivoted to the supporting structure; means for operating the movable jaw; a resilient, depending arm attached at its outer end to the movable jaw' and located to one side of the movable jaw, the resilient arm coacting with the material engaged by the jaws, to hold down the material on the fixed jaw, and toaid in elevating the movable jaw, and to aid in retracting the punch in the stripper, when the jaws and the punch are used simultaneously; and means for pivotally connecting the punch to the movable jaw.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
. GEORGE SEARS.
