Description

W. H. VATCHER.
CAP. APPLICATION FILED JULY2319I5.
1,183,610; Patented May 16, 191@ il" i i VVlllLlliIAIll/I H. VATCIIIER', OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented iay 116, 1,916.
Application filed .Tuly 28. 1915. Serial No. 42.245.
To all whom t may concern lie it known that l, VILLIAM H. Varenne, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Los ."higeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps; and I do hereby declare that the following full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention i'elates to adjustable caps of the type shown in the alh'med application for patent ,filed by Vatcher and Melchor September 21, 1914, Serial No. 862,841), allowed April S, 1915.
The primary aim of the invention is to produce a cap in which the head-engaging' portion may be readily adjusted to any desired size without distorting the .part of the cap that engages the head.
A further object of the invention is to providesimple and ornan'iental means that will conceal the external portion of the capY that has been adjusted so that the external f bulge or other distortment incidental to the adjustment will not be visible.
A simple and practical embodiment of the improved cap is shown in the. accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 'l is an invertdperspective view of acap constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the head-engaging portion of the cap. lFig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 designates the crown of the improved cap, 2 the head band thereof, and 3 the lsweat band. The sweat band 3 has its opposite ends spaced apart with relation to the center of the rear portion of the cap,v and said ends are open. The longitndinaledges of the sweat band are stitched to the corresponding edges of the head hand Q to form companion pockets 4 between the juxtaposed walls of said head band-and sweat band. The head band is continuous, and at the center of its rear portion has a guide buckle 5 stitched or otherwise fastened to the outer sui'face of the said head band. AOn the inner' surface, the head band carries a stifi'ening reinforcing member G that conforms to the contour of the sweat band 3, the reinforcing member' beingcentrally attached to the head band. for example. h v the same stitches that rattach the buckle to said head hand, and the free ends are slidablc in the end pockets 4.-. By means of the stiil'ening member G and the pockets 4, it will be seen that the head band may be adjusted without distorting the sweat band.
Adjusting straps T are stitched or otherwisc fastened to opposite sides of the head band 2, the free ends of said straps extending to .and through the ends of the guide bucklef and being` looped back, under the band portion of the straps, as shown in Figs 1 and 2 of the drawing. The free ends of the straps 7 are provided with socket members, and at points intermediate said ends, the straps are provided with regularly spaced stud members 'complemental t0 and adapted to be selectively engaged by the socket members to fasten the head band in the desired adjusted position.
A bow or other type of ornament S is carried b v the buckle 5 and may be attached thereto by the stitches that attach said buckle to the head band. As shown in the drawings, the ornament is so disposed that it conceals the looped portions of the straps 7 as well as the buckle.
Claims:
1'. A cap comprising a crown provided with a head band, a guide buckle carried by the head band at the center of the rear portion of its outer surface, adjusting straps carried by opposite sides of the head band and engaging the buckle, a. sweat-band hav ing open ends spaced apart with relation to each other and stitched at their longitudinal edges to the head-band to form end pockets, and means carried by the head band f and engaging the sweat band pockets to preserve the contour of said sweat band.
