Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
Application filed January 31, 1916. Serial No. 75,200.
To all whom it may coacern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. COLE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the countyof New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to window sash locks, and the object thereof is to Provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction, eflicient in operation, and comparatively inexpensive, and which maybe easily applied and by means of which the'sashes may be securely locked in a closed position, and which may be manipulated so as to permit of the lowering of the top sash or raising of the lower sash for ventilation or other purposes, whenever desired, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is an inside view of one side portion of a window frame and showing the corresponding side portions of the top and bottom sashes with my improvement applied; Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, but showing only that part of the sash lock connected with the bottom sash.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown one side portion of the window frame, comprising one side a of saidframe, a part a of the top of the frame and a part a of the bottom of the frame, and in said figure I have also shown the corresponding side portions of the top sash b and bottom sash c.
In the practice, of my invention, I secure to one side of the top sash b a vertically arranged plate 03 provided with spaced and cup-shaped recesses (Z preferably semispherical in form, and the plate 05 is secured to the side of the top sash by screws e passed through the bottoms of said recesses. I also secure on the top of one corner of the bottom sash a block 7 having a cap plate 9, and mounted in connection with the block f and cap plate 9 is a lock arm 71. provided at its ends with spherical heads b and formed in and by the block f and plate 9 is a spherical recess z' in which one head 72. of the lock arm is placed and the other end 71, of said lock arm is adapted to enter the recesses d lathe plate d. The plate 9 has a central raised collar 9 in the opposite or lateral side portions of which are recesses 9 and in the operation of the lock arm 71. it may be turned into either of the positions shown in dotted lines in Fig.1, when it is not desired to lock the sashes, so as to permit of their vertical movement, but the operative position of said lock arm is that shown in Fig. 2, and the plate 9 and the collar 9 thereof are also provided in the back side thereof with a reces s g which permits the loclr arm h to swing freely into the operative position. The plate (Z is provided below the recesses d with grooves (Z and with this construction the top sash with the lock arm in operat1ve position, as shown in Fig. 2, may be moved upwardly, or the bottom sash downwardly, and said lock arm will slide up and down over the plate d and will engage either or any of the recesses d From the foregoing it will be seen that the connection of the lock arm h with the part f is a ball and socket connection, or a universal joint, and the sashes may be securely locked in the closed position, and the bottom sash may be moved downwardly and held in any desired point of adjustment, by the lock arm h, and the sashes may be supported by the usual counter-balanced weights without interfering with the operation of my improved sash lock, and when this is done both sashes may be partially opened as will be readily understood.
One of my improved sash locks may be placed at each side of the top sash, if de sired, and while I have shown and described the construction which I prefer, my invention is not limited to the exact details thereof herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a sash look, a plate adapted to be secured to one side of the top sash and in a vertical position and provided with vertically arranged semi-spherical recesses having downwardly directed and tapered grooves communicating therewith, and a lock arm provided at each end with a spherical head, said lock arm being adapted to be connected with a ball and socket joint member secured to the top of one corner portion of the bottom sash and comprising a base block and a cap, said cap being provided in its opposite sides and in the back thereof with radial recesses.
2. In a sash lock, a plate adapted to be secured to the side of a sash and provided with a plurality of semi-spherical recesses having tapered grooves communicating therewith, a lock arm provided at each end with a spherical head and a suitably supported socket member with which one end of said lock arm is connected, the other end of said lock arm being adapted to operate in connection with said semi-spherical recesses and the tapered grooves communicating therewith.
3. In a sash look, a plate adapted to be secured to the side of a sash and provided with a plurality of semi-spherical recesses, a lock arm provided at each end with a spherical head, a suitably supported socket member comprising a base block and a cap, said base block and cap having a spherical recess to receive the spherical head on one end of said lock arm, the other spherical head of said arm being adapted to operate in connection with said semi-spherical recesses, and means in said cap for holding said lock arm in an inoperative position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 28th day of January 1916.
CHARLES H. COLE.
