Description

1952. J w. RUCKER WINDOW LOCK AND GRILL Filed Sept. 2, 1949 PE z.
A TTOE/VEY This invention relates to securing devices, or looks, and it has articular-(reference to looks for balanced window sashes,'and-its'principal object resides inithe:provisionp of :awindows-lock capable of being installed on aILtypespf Ivertically operated sashes'by which the same can be secured inclosed positionsor issue "of several adjusted positions thus affording means whereby thelower sash-can-be raised-sufficiently t admit suitable ventilatiomw-hile -preventing in sof unauthorized persons-from buts'ide. Another object of the invention is that of providing a simple and inexpensive structure which can be readily attached to window sashes already installed and in operation thus providing ltu k nt i iorth. a e-ate 2, isiiegs ia K ff-f- ((31.20-52):
' "Figure 8 fragment tarily. and illustr'a h lock, 'tlie keeper;bar and-grill'memberf rid v y, rily shows the ilo'w e'if pertio'n-of awindow frame;thelo'wer eash bein greater security for occupants of the building I while afiording ventilation.
An object of the invention is that of providing an open grill member for hinged attachment to the lowermost sash and be capable of operation to cover the-opening beneath the sash when the latter is raised and folded inwardly against the sash when the same is lowered to a closed position.
Broadly, the invention contemplates the provision of a safety securing means for dual sash assemblies operating vertically in a frame and lock the sashes in adjusted positions in said frame. 1
While the foregoing objects are Paramount, other and lesser objects will become manifest as the description proceeds, taken in connection with the appended drawings wherein:
Figure 1 fragmentarily illustrates the juncture of a pair of balanced sashes, showing the invention, in longitudinal section, installed thereon.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the invention shown attached to a pair of sashes, the latter being fragmentarily illustrated.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the invention installed on a pair of window sashes, the
latter being fragmentarily shown.
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the invention illustrating the bolt and actuating pin.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal cross-sectional illustration of a modified form of the. invention in which is embodied a knurled knob for actuating the bolt.
Figure 6 fragmentarily illustrates, in vertical section, a window frame having a pair of sashes installed therein, and showing a grill member hingedly secured to the lower sash and depending therefrom.
Figure 7 is a front elevational view of a pair of sashes in a window frame, shown fragmenclosed, and 'illiistiati'ng' the grioperative position.
The invention, therefore} device -I secured-to the top' bar ll of the -lowermost" of a pair of w'indow sashes lZ'j-and" l 3, The lock l-ll'co'operates witha keeper bar" M which is attached in'a vertical position to one of the'stiles l of the upper sash 13.
The lock l0 consists of a base [6 formed with a depending flange I1 and both base, l6 and flange member inll have apertures l8 for screws IQ for securing the assembly to the sash I2, as illustrated in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4. An integral barrel portion 20 is formed on the base It in which a bolt 2| .is slidably arranged and is adapted to engage the spaced apertures 2'2 along the keeper bar M which is attached to the upper sash 13, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
The barrel 29 has a slot 23 formed obliquely across its top, as apparent in Figure 2, through which a pin 24 projects, its inner end being rigidly fixed to the bolt 2i to provide means for actuating the latter in a spiral motion longitudinally of the barrel 2B. The slot 23 defines a substantially spiral course, as well as being arranged obliquely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the barrel 20, to advance and retract the bolt 21, as the same is rotated, to engage the apertures 22 in the keeper bar I4. I
In Figure 5 is illustrated a modified form of the lock ID in which the bolt 25 therein is formed with a spiral groove '26 receiving a pin 21 which is connected interiorly of the housing or barrel 23. As the bolt 25 is rotated by the knurled head 28 it will advance or retract in the same manner as the bolt 2| is operated. The structure shown in cross-section in Figure 5 is otherwise identical with that illustrated in Figures 1 to 4, inclusive.
Hingedly connected to the lower edge 29 of the lower sash I2 is a grill 30 which has an arrangement'of bars 3| within a frame structure 32. This device is illustrated more clearly in Figure 7. It is the purpose of the grill 36 to close the opening below the lower sash [2 when the latter is raised. Thus, ventilation may be enjoyed while the window is securely barred against entry therethrough from the outside.
The side members 33 of the frame 32 extend above the top members and are secured at their upper ends by suitable pins or screws 3 3 to brackets 35 which are attached to the lower edge 29 of the sash [2 so that the side members 33 will iimu ajiot il oriiprises a locking 3 lie along the inner sid es of the window frame 36. swinging outwardly to assume the operative position shown in Figures 6 and 7, or the collapsed position shown in Figure 8 when the sash I2 is closed. The lower ends 31 of the side members 33 engage the sill 38 of the window frame 36 in front of the stool 39 when the grill 30 is in operative position below the sash l2, as in Figures 6 and 7. The grill 30 is folded upwardly against the sash If in its moperative position or when the sash- |'2,is lowered to the closed position. as illustrated in'Figure 8;
In the arrangement described the sashes I Z and I 3 are locked together so that they may be arranged as a unit which will afford; a limited space either above or below the combined sashes h sash is closed. the said grill frame having its lower I2 and I3, if these members are operated as-a unit, and the opening below the lowermost sash l2 can be closedto prevent ingress. thusloekin'g the units and rendering them immovable but afiording an opening to admit outside air to the enclosure v d by e w ndow; 3 g.
Manifestly, the structure shown and described is capable of considerablemodifi oation, by; persons skilled theart, withoutdeparting from the spirit and intent of the inventionorthescope of the appended claims. r I
What is claimed is: 4 v V a 1. In a grill for windows having vertically adjustable ashes in a window frame, in combination with the lowermost sash, a; grill frame hing-y edly secured at its upper end to thelower inner a l edge of said lowermost sash and swingable inwardly when said sash is lowered to closed position, the lower edge of said grill frame being engageable with the sill of said window frame when said-sash is raised to cover the opening in said window frame, and means for locking said sash in raised position whereby to secure said grill frame in said opening against the said window sill.
I a r l or, ow jvhav ne y rt y iustable upper and lower ashes; in combination with the lower sash in a" window frame, a grill frame hingedly attached at its upper edge to the inner side of the lower bar of said lower sash and swingable inwardly and upwardly when said edge 'engageable with the sill of said window frame when said lower sash is raised, and means for securing said lower sash in opened position to 'retain said grill frame in the opening in said window frame below said. raised lower sash.
