W'INIDOW-FASTENER.
rea ies.
Application filed May 19, 1920. Serial No. 382,585.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMO SoNonY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asheville, inthe county ofBuncombe and State of North Carolina,have invented a new and useful lVindow-Fastener, of which the following is a specification. 9 i
This invention relates to an'improved window fastener, and more particularly a device whereby the upper sash maybe held in a closed position locked against being opened from the outside, or whereby it may be lowered or opened from the top and locked in this position so as to allow ventilation, while preventing unauthorized entrance into a room or building.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a ventilating burglarproof lock or safety ventilating lock for window sashes in which the top portion of the lower sash carries a spring pressed bolt of novel con struction adapted to engage an apertured keeper plate carried by the inner face of the upper sash so as to hold the upper sash in any desired adjusted positions, said keeper plate being provided with means to guide or direct the bolt into the apertures or seats thereof.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description procoeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a window frame having the upper and lower sashes thereof equipped with the improved window lock;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevational view of the bolt carried by the lower sash; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the device shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, my improved window lock is shown as embodying a tubular casing 10 having a flat relatively elongated attaching plate 11 at the face thereof by means of which it is secured within an aperture 12 in the top cross rail 13 of the lower sash 14, as by means of screws or the like 15. F or this purpose, said plate is apertured near its ends, the devicebeing secured in position as particularly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Movably mounted in the casing is 'a bolt or pin 16 having a knurled operating head'17. The head 17 is threaded detachably on the bolt 16. The front and rear portions of the'casing are designated at 18 and 19, and'are provided with alined openings 20 and 21 movably receiving said bolt therethrough; I Mounted on the bolt between the end portion 18 and ashoulder 22 formed by an enlargement on the bolt at the inner end thercof, is an expansible helical. spring 23 serving to project the bolt at the inner end of the casing from the inner face of the top cross rail of the sash 14, the bolt being provided with a plurality of'apertures 24 adapted to receive a pin 25 whereby the tension of the spring may be adjusted according to the size and weight of the window. The bolt is further provided with a radial projection or lug 26 corresponding to the tang or bit of a key which may be drawn outwardly through a recess or slot 27 extending radially from the aperture 20 so that the bolt or pin may be retracted in the manner particularly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, when the lug 26 maybe passed through the slot or recess 27 and engaged against the outer face of the end portion 18 of the casing at the front plate thereof. 1
The upper sash 28 carries at one side rail thereof, a keeper plate 29 which is provided with a series of spaced apertures 31 alining with adjacent sockets 30 in the face ofthe side rail at the inside. The plate is rigidly secured in position as indicated at 32, being vertically disposed so that the apertures will aline vertically withthe bolts 16, in order that the latter may engage the sockets or seats so as to retain the upper sash in a closed position locked against possibility of opening the same from the outside, or held in an open position lowered at the top, to the desired degree, to give proper ventilation without permitting unauthorized en trance or access. In order to properly guide the bolts into the sockets, the plate is provided with spaced ribs 33 projecting inwardly and disposed in parallel relation, the upper ends thereof flaring or diverging outwardly as indicated at 34 so that when the upper sash is lowered or the lower sash raised, the bolt will be guided between said ribs, inorder that said bolts will properly enter any one of said respective seats or sockets. When the sashes are closed, the bolt will engage the lower of the three sockets provided in the upper sash, so as to lock the window in a closed position. The upper two sockets will be engaged bythe bolt, when the upper sash is lowered, or the lower sash elevated, to give proper ventilation, but v 7 dow adjacent to the meeting or parting rail thereof and provided with a series of vertically spaced apertures therethrough, said side rail having sockets alined with said apertures, walls arranged at either side of said apertures and a spring bolt carried by the top rail of the lower sash adapted to be guided between said walls for engagement with said apertures and sockets, said bolt comprising a casing adapted to be mounted in the upper rail of the lower sash in alinement with said apertures, said bolt having a shank portion provided with a radially projecting lug and said casing having inner and outer walls, the outer wall being provided with a recess to receive said lug therethrough for contact against the front portion of the casing, whereby said bolt may be held retracted against the action of its spring, said bolt having an enlargement on its upper end forming a shoulder, a spring on the bolt between the front wall thereof and said shoulder for normally projecting the bolt to engage said apertures and sockets, said bolt having a knurled operating head, and means cooperating between the spring and bolt for adjusting the tension of the spring.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELMO SONGEY.
