Be it known that I, JACOB DARES, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Starbuck, in the county of Columbia and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spear-Knives, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in spear knives and its object is to produce a device of this class adapted to securely inv pale the game as soon as it is struck. Simplicity in construction and efficiency 1n operation are other objects.

lith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which- Figure l is a plan view of the knife. The reference numeral 1 designates the handle to which a casting 2 is secured thatl is formed with oppositely disposed ears 3, 3. The handle is projected to form a casing l provided with a partition 5 through which a. shank (3 extends that also passes through the casing l and is provided with a shoulder 7 disposed within the casing and upon which one end of a spring 8 rests which spring also abuts the partition 5. The shank 6 beyond the casing 4 is bifurcated and carries a pin 9 upon which a disk 10 is mounted which frictionally engages the periphery of an approximately semi-circular jaw 11 which is recessed at 11a to receive said disk and is arranged upon a pivot 12 carried in the longitudinally slotted portion 13 of the blade 14; said blade being further formed with an eye 15 and with a pointed termination 16.

The normal position of the jaw 11 is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and thel purpose, of the disk 1() is to frictionally retain the jaw in such position, pressure upon the disk Leing afforded through the medium of the spring 8.

The knife thrown or hurled at the game and when it strikes the same the pointed end of the blade enters the flesh until the fiesh strikes the jaw 11 at its lowest point thus swinging said jaw upon its pivot, against t-he tension of the disk .10, and forcing the point of this jaw also into the tiesh impaling the game between said jaw and blade in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3.

To release the game from the knife the jaw is manually forced back into original position and the blade withdrawn.

To use asa harpoon the ears 3, 3 will serve to secure the ends of the cord.

lVhat is claimed is:

1. A spear knife comprising a handle, a blade made integral therewith, a curved jaw pivotally associated with said blade and. means carried by said handle for frictional engagement with said jaw whereby the same is yieldingly retained in normal position.

2. A spear knife comprising a handle. a blade made integral therewith. a. curved re cessed jaw pivotally associated with said blade and a spring-pressed friction .roller carried by said handle normally in engagement with the recessed portion of said jaw to yieldingly retain the same in normal position.

3. A spear knife comprising a handle. a blade integral therewith. a curved `jaw pivotally associated with said blade and means operatively associated with said blade and jaw whereby they are yieldingly retained in fixed relation with each other.
