BENJAMIN P. FORTIN', OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB TO UNDEBWOOD TYPE- WRI'IER COMPANY, OF
new YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION or DEL-AWARE.
ERASING-SHIELD marr s- RITING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
v Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed February 18, 1914. Serial No. 819,323.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. FORTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasing- Shields for Type-\Vriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in erasure shields for use on the cylindrical platen of a typewriting machine.
The main object of this invention is to avoid the liability of clogging the mechanism of the typewriter by the particles of grit and paper which are scatteredin all directions by the rubber eraser, when in use.
I provide a thin shield of celluloid or other material with a. wall or ledge extending all around its edge, to serve as a catchall for the abraded material to protect the shield from injury, and to render it more convenient in handling. I
Other features and advantages will here inafter appear.
In theaccompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a platen and my improved erasing shield in position for use over a work-sheet. Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation of the same, showing the shield as lying close against the worksheet and platen during an erasure, with the abraded. matter confined on the surface of the shield.
The shield 1 may be made of tin, celluloid or other suitable material, and provided with an aperture 2, through which an eraser may work upon an exposed character written on a work-sheet 3. Upon the edges of this shield, I provide a surrounding, upstanding wall or ledge 4, the inside edge 5 of which may partly overhang, as shown in Fig. 2, to form a pocket 6 for the abraded matter. made of somewhat ture of a platen S. The flexibility of the structure permits the entire shield to be easily pressed against the work-sheet 3, as shown in Fig. 2.
The shield 1 shown in the accompanying drawings, is made of celluloid and has ceproducts after apertured shield shaped to thecontour of a platen, and a This wall or ledge is preferably flexible material, and has its sides 7 curved to conform with the curvamented thereto a frame 4, which may be constructed of the same material and of such thickness as to enable it to retain its contour.
The grit-catch device herein described comprises in fact a receptacle in the form of a grit tray, which is capable, when placed upon a worksheet over a platen, for erasure purposes, of adapting itself closely to the platen contour, and therefore of hugging or clamping the work-sheet snugly between said tray and platen, whereby the worksheet, even if flimsy, will not shift or wrinkle during 'the erasing operation. The curved formation of the tray and its flexible character render it particularly serviceable in the performance of this function. This function is of great importance, as is also the main purpose of the invention, which is to prevent the abraded products of erasure from falling into the machine, where incalculable damage is effected through the fine particles entering the bearings of thetypebars and other moving parts. By means of the tray-like formation of the grit-catch device, the abraded products of erasure, as created, are positively retained thereon, the grit-catch device being removed with said the erasing. operation, and from the machine. 1 Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: r
1. A. grit-catch device comprising an of thin flexible material,
emptied away surrounding upstanding wall of somewhat flexible material on the edge of said shield.
2. A grit-catch device comprising an apertured shield of thin flexible material, and a surrounding upstanding wall of somewhat flexible material attached to the said shield, said wall being curved to conform to.
the curve of a plate 3. A grit-catch device comprising an apertured shield of thin flexible material curved to conform to the. contour of a platen, a surrounding upstanding wall of somewhat flexible material about the edge of said shield attached to said shield and curved t0 cenform to the curve of a platen.
41-. A grit-catch device comprising an 5 'apertured shield of thin flexible material,
and a surrounding upstanding Wall of some- What flexible material attached to the said overhanging. I 7 BENJAMIN P. FORTIN. Witnesses:
