ERASING-SHIELD.

Be it known that I, VIRGINIA I. COPLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have made certain new and useful Improvements inv Erasing-Shields, of which the folvlowing is a specication.
My invention is an erasing-shield for use on type-Writers, and is especially designed for use on work Which is being manifolded by carbon-sheets, and has for an object to provide in connection With the section for pro` tecting the impressions adjacent to that being erased a base for the pressure of the eraser, so the act of erasing Will not cause the carbons to blur the carbon copy or copies.
The invention consists in certain novel constructions and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my invention as in use. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View ofthe device inverted to show the base-section. Fig. 3 is a cross section on about line 3 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 shows a shield in which the two sections of the shield are folded from a single strip.
In erasing from a sheet on the platen of a type -Writer difficulty is experienced when carbon-copies are being made because the carbon-copies Will be blurred or blotted by the carbon-sheets under the pressure of the eraser. My invention aims to overcome this by providing in connection with the perforated shield-section an underlying base-section, which in practice willoverlie the carboncopy and receive the pressure of the eraser.
The shield is shown as composed of the perforated section or sheet A, having perforations A', through which the eraser may operate, and the base-section B, connected at one end with the section A and free at other points therefrom, so it can be slipped under the typecopy being made and rest thereunder over the carbon-copy. The openings A in the section A are suitably arranged tolpermit the rubber to reach through to the letter or Word to be erased and at the same time protect the adjacent letters from the action of the rubber.
The shield may be made of any suitable flexible sheet material, and I find that thin sheet-celluloid gives good results, being flexi-V ble enough to bend longitudinally and transversely to conform to the platen. I
In Fig. 4 the shield is represented as formed in a single piece,- While in Fig. 2 the guardsection and base-section are separate and are secured together at one end by suitable fas tenings, shown as small riveted eyelets C.`
The device is simple, can be cheaply made, iseasily adjusted for use, and Will be found eicient for the purpose' for which it is de# signed, as above described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` 1. An erasing-shield composed of the upper section perforated to permit the operation of the eraser through it and the base-section in connection therewith and adapted to fit between the type-copy and carbon-copy and overlie the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. An erasing-shield composed of the section having openings through which the eraser can operate and the base-section connected at one end with the upper section and adapted to underlie the type-copy and receive the pressure of the eraser, substantially as set forth.
3. An erasing-shield consisting of the upper or main section or strip perforated to permit the operation of the eraser through it, the base section or strip and the riveted eyelets connecting said strips at one end, substantially as set forth.
4. The erasing-shield herein described composed of two iiexible strips one of which is provided with openings through Which the eraser may operate and the other of which is imperforate and is adapted to underlie the sheet being erased and is closed or imperforate oppositethe openings in the first plate, and the fastenings connecting said strips at one end, substantially as set forth.
