To all w ham it mag concern Be it known that I, DAVID P. GERA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iron Belt, in the county of Iron'and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Singeing Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a hair singeing device for the use of barbers and hair dressers, and particularly to a hair singeing comb, the object of the invention being to provide a comb of novel construction, the said comb having a guard so disposed with relation to the teeth thereof as to hold the hair engaged by the teeth in such position that only the projecting portions of the hair follicles will be singed or burned off, thereby protecting the remainder of the hair.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a singeing comb having a fine toothed comb surface whereby, after each portion of the'hair is singed, such portion may be combed out to dispose the hair in normal position.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a singeing comb embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line,22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is adetail'vie'w of the body of the singeing comb illustrating a feature of construction.

In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a singeing comb 1, comprising a comb proper 2 and a handle 3 extending longitudinally from one end of said comb. The lower edge of this handle is preferably formed to provide an auxiliary or fine toothed comb 4, by which after each operation of singeing, the device may beemployed in reverse position to comb out the singed hair to a normal state or condition. either to dress the hair or dispose of it for further singeing.

The teeth 5 of the comb proper 2 may be of any suitable degree of fineness, and this comb may be of any preferred dimensions. As shown, the back of the comb proper 2 is provided beyond each end of the series of teeth 5 with supporting portions or arms 6 to carry a guard 7. may be of the'same degree of fineness as the teeth 5. At its ends the guard 7 is provided with arms or legs 9 which rest against the outer facesof the arms 6 and are secured thereto by rivets or other suitable fastenings 10. As shown, the arms 6' are bent forwardly at an oblique angle to the plane of the teeth 5, so that the guard comb 7 will lie at an out- Ward and downward angle to the plane of the comb 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

In the use of the device, it will be understood that the comb is employed in the usual manner to engage a portion of the hair. The ends of the hair which project beyond the face of the guard comb will be burned or singed,the guard comb thus serving as an accurate gage by means of which the amount of hair to be singed off may be more easily and correctly determined. It will be observed that as the teeth of the guard comb stand ofi' or are spaced from the teeth of the singeing.

A material advantage resulting'from the use of my invention, incidental to those set forth, is that the operator may work with greater celerity, since it is not necessary for him to accurately gage the extent of projection of the ends of the hair, while at the same time irregularities in singeing are to a very large extent avoided. By providing the auxiliary comb surface on the handle 3, it

will be evident that the operator may comb or smooth out the singed hair without recourse to a second comb, and as a result the singeing operation may be carried out in a quick and convenient manner.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a singeing comb having a handle projecting longitudinally beyond one end thereof, and a guard comb arranged upon one side of the singeing comb and at an angle thereto, said combs having their backs outwardly disposed and the points of their teeth arranged in proximity, the points of the teeth of the guard comb being arranged to overlie the points of the teeth of the sin geing comb.

2. A singeing device comprising a singeing comb having a handle projecting from one end thereof, said handle being provided with a comb surface, and a guard comb arranged at one side of and at an oblique angle to the singeing comb, said combs having their backs outwardly disposed and-=-theirteeth projecting toward each other, the

points of the teeth of the guardcombbeing arranged to overlie the points of the teeth of the 'singeing'comb.

3. A singeing device comprising-a singe ing comb having a handle provided with a series of-teethand-whaving arms beyond the terminal teethof the singeing comb bent laterally beyond-one-side-of the comb and a guard comb having similar teeth and arms,
