ALBERT L. PLATT AND ISAIAH WHITE WILMETH, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ICE-CREAM FREEZERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,149, dated August 15, 187].
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT L. PLATI and ISAIAH WHITE WILME'rI-I, of Bloomington in the county of McLean and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Cream Freezer; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an ice-cream freezer, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the entire freezer, and Fig. 2 is a side view of a portion of the ice-box.
A represents a box, of suitable dimensions, arranged in or upon a convenient frame, B. At one end of the box A is placed a metal frame, 0, through which and through the end of the box is passed a horizontal shaft, (1, with a flywheel, I), mounted thereon. 0n the outer end of the shaft to is a pinion, b, which gears with a cogwheel, E, provided with a crank, G, for turning. H represents the cream-cylinder, placed horizontally in the box A. To the bottom, or rather one end, of the cylinder is attached a wooden disk, I, in the outside of which is acentral hole covered with a plate, (I, which plate is provided with a square hole for the insertion of the inner square end of the shaft to. The other end or mouth of the cylinder H is made flaring, as shown, and closed by a movable head, J. Through the center of the cylinder passes a horizontal shaft, 0, provided inside the cylinder with beaters K. The inner end of the shaft 6 is inserted in a hole formed in the center of the bottom of the cylinder and the disk I, while the outer end passes through the head J and a sleeve, f, and is held by a latch, L, on the outside of the box A, said latch fitting in notches upon the end of the shaft and thus holding it, with the beaters, stationary. The'sleevefpasses through the end of the box A, and is, upon its outer end, provided with a wheel, h, for turning the same. The inner end of this sleeve is provided with screw-threads which screw into and through across-bar, M, the ends of which are held under catches i i in the mouth of the cylinder H. The sleeve f, passing through said cross bar, presses against the movable head J, and holds the same tight in the end cylinder. It will be noticed that this head J has only a single point, x, of contact with the cylinder, thus obviating the necessity of any packing, and the head may.
at any time be screwed tight into the cylinder.
The box A being filled, in the usual manner, with ice and salt and the cylinder H with the materials for ice-cream, the crank G is turned, when the cylinder is rapidly revolved in the ice, while the heaters remain stationary. These beaters at the same time act as scrapers, preventing any adhesion to the sides of the cylinder.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a cylinder, H, and boxing A, the movable head J beveled on its circumference, as described, cross-bar M, and screw-sleeve f, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the box A, of the hor izontally-revolvin g cylinder H, stationary shaft 6 with beaters and scrapers K, movable head J, bar M, and screw-sleeve f, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 21 st day of June, 1871.
ALBERT L. PLATT. ISAIAH WHITE WILMETH.
