'BRICK HL JOHNSON, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
BLIND-JOINT HOOK.
Application filed January 23, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LERroK H. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blind-Joint Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for securely fastening two timbers together, and particularly for fastening two boards together edgewise.
The objects of my invention are: First to provide a device that shall automatically engage and hold two boards together in edgewise contact, and shall be invisible when so engaged; Second to provide a device that shall be economical to manufacture, simple in construction and positive in its operation. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism and construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which therefore becomes a part of this application for Letters Patent, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of two boards joined edgewise by means of my invention, and shown partially broken away to plainly illustrate the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one member of my invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the other member of my invention.
Like characters designate like parts throughout the several views of the drawing in which Numeral 1 is one board and 2 the other board which are to be secured together edgewise by means of my invention, said boards each being mortised out to receive the members of my invention.
One member of my invention, shown in Fig. 2, consists of a plate 3 having ears or lugs t oppositely disposed thereon and carrying a pin 5 upon which is pivotally mounted a spring dog 6, said dog having at its end a ratchet tooth 7 The other member of my invention, shown in Fig. 3, consists of a rectangular shaped hollow casing 8 one side 8a of which is provided with a slot 9 adapted to receive dog 6, and a. fulcrum piece 10 adapted to engage with dog 6 as shown in Fig. 1. The face of casing 8 opposite said fulcrum 10 is inclined to ward side 8a as shown at 8b, and upon the inside of said inclined portion I provide ratchet teeth 11 adapted to enga-ge tooth 7 of dog 6. Portion 8a is extended toform Specification of Letters Patent.

ears 8c for the purpose of securing this member 8 in its respective mortise by means of screws, bolts, nails or other convenient means, for which holes 12 in said ears S are provided. Similar' holes 13 are provided in plate 3 of the other member, shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose of securing this member in its respective mortise as shown in Fig. 1.
An indicating scale is provided by means of lines 14 upon one member, shown in Fig. 2, and a single line 15 upon the other member, shown in Fig. 3, said lines being in such relation that when line 15 registers with any of the lines 14 dog tooth 7 is in proper engagement with one of the ratchet teeth 11.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When two boards, 1 and 2 in Fig. l, are to be secured together in edgewise relation, the two portions of my invention are placed together so that line 15 registers with one of the lines 141 upon the other member. The two members are thus securely locked together by means of the spring dog 6 having entered slot 9, passed over piece 10 and sprung into engagement with teeth 11, as shown in Fig. 1. A slot 16 is provided, as shown in Fig. 3, for affording means to insert a screw driver blade or other convenient tool for disengaging dog 6 and ratchet teeth 11 when desired. While the two menibers are thus locked together they are placed upon the boards 1 and 2 and the location of the respective mortises marked upon the boards. The mortises are then cut and the members placed therein and secured by screws or bolts. The two boards are then brought together edgewise, and dog 6 inserted in slot 9. The boards are then given such relative motion as will cause dog 6 to firmly engage ratchet teeth 11, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus the two boards are securely attached together.
Several of my devices may be used along the edges of long timbers, all acting in unison if desired.
My invention may be made of any material and of any size deemed advisable for a device of such character, and while I have illustrated and described a preferred form of construction found convenient in materializing my invention, I wish to include in this application for Letters Patent all mechanical equivalents or substitutes which may be fairly considered to come within the scope and purview of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention so that any one skilled in the art may be enabled to construct and use saine, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A blind joint hook comprising a ratchet member of hollow form having a longitudinal slot therein, a raised portion in the interior thereof adjacent one end of said slot, and a plurality of ratchet teeth opposite Copies of this patent may be obtained -for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents` Washington, D.
