ATTACHMENT FOR SHOVELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916.
App1ication filed November 24, 1914. Serial No. 83'3,692.
1/ 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HARRISON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Shovels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an attachment for shovels, and has for its object to provide means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for reinforcing the discharge end of a shovel, thereby-increasing the life thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a removable reinforcement for the discharge end of a shovel, said reinforcement when worn out being conveniently removed and a new one substituted.
Further objects of the invention are to provide an attachment for shovels, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, conveniently secured in position to the discharge end of a shovel, efflcient in its use, and inexpensive.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure l is a perspective view of a shovel showing the attachment thereof in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan. Fig. 4: a section on line XX of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a handle shank, terminating in a grip 2 and which has secured thereto a body portion 3 of the shovel. The discharge end of the body portion 3 is indicated at 4. The body portion 3 is flanged as at 5.
The attachment comprises a plate 6, having its inner edge scalloped as at 7 and its end edges rounding as at 8. The forward edge of the plate 6, which is indicated at 9, is of less length than the rear edge. The lower face of the plate 6 is curvilineal in contour as indicated at 10, and in transverse section, the plate 6 is segment-shaped. The marginal portion of the upper face of the plate 6, at each end, is formed with a flange 11, which inclines inward toward the forward edge 9 of the plate 6. The longitudinal marginal portion of the plate 6, at the forward edge thereof, has a flange 12, which terminates in the flanges 11. The forward edges of the flanges 11, 12, are slightly undercut as at 13, 14. The flanges 11 greatly increase in height from the rearedge toward the forward. edge of the plate 6. The plate 3 6 is formed with a series of openings 15, through which are adapted to extend suitable hold fast devices, as indicated at 16, and said holdfast devices engage in the body portion 3 whereby the plate 6 is detachably secured to the body portion 3.
Any suitable means can be employed for securing the attachment to the body portion of the shovel, or the attachment can be riveted to said body portion. The attachment is adapted to be secured to the discharge end of the body portion 3 in a manner whereby the edge of said discharge end will abut against the inner edge of the flange 12. The inner edges of the flange 11 are positioned against the outer faces of the flange 5 of the body portion 3. The upper face of the plate 6 is positioned against the lower face of the body portion 3.
What I claim is A reinforcing attachment for the discharge end of a shovel body comprising a plate adapted to be secured to said discharge end and having the forward marginal portion and the end marginal portions of its upper face flanged to provide abutment for the discharge end of a body portion of a shovel when the plate is secured to said end to reinforce the latter, said plate being segment-shaped in section.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HARRISON.
