ANDBO CZESNAK AND MICHAEL BOLER-ATZ, 015 DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PORTABLE FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1916.
Application filed. October 18, 1915. Serial No. 56,458.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANDRo CznsNAK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and MICHAEL BOLERATZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in portable fence post.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a portable fence post with a rigid anchoring means removably positioned in the earth at any desired point.
A further object of the device is the provision of an adjustable anchoring means for a post base, the same being adapted for supporting the desired form of post thereon.
A still further object of the device is to provide an earth auger anchoring means for removably retaining a post base in position, while a post is arranged removably secured in an upright position upon the base.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
lin the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like-designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the base of the device showing the anchoring means in position for actuation. Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical central longitudinal sectional View through the complete device. Fig. i is a horizontal transverse sectional view thereof. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the elements illustrated in Fig. 1 with parts broken away. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the lower portion of the fence post, and Fig. 7 is a sectional View taken upon line VIIVII of Fig. 4.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, a substantially rectangular base 10 is provided adapted to be embedded in the earth such as 11 to a height substantially level with the central square portion 12 thereof. A central perforation 13 is provided through the base portion 12 adapted to receive the shank 14: of an auger 15 therein, a ratchet wrench 16 being adapted for operative connection. with the tang 17 of the auger shank 14: for revolving the auger and driving the same downwardly into the earth 11.
The auger member constitutes an anchoring device and is provided with a helical sprlng 18 encircling the same and bearing against a transverse pin 19 carried by the shank l4: and upon the base portion 12. By this arrangement, it will be seen that upon turning the anchor 15 into the earth by means of the wrench 16 that the spring 18 will be compressed thus more firmly seating the same against the base 12 and thus firmly holding the base in its position in the earth.
Having thus firmly mounted the base 10 in the earth by means of the said anchor, any desired form of post may be removably seated upon the base portion 12 and an ornamental post 20 is herein disclosed for being so mounted. The post 20 is provided with a central longitudinal bore 21 open ing centrally of the base 22 of the post and adapted to fit over the shank 14- and spring 18, the bottom of the post 20 having an annular flange 23 by means of which the post is mounted upright upon the base portion 12. Pivoted locking plates 2A are carried by the base portion 12 and are provided with inturned flanges 25 upon their inner sides adapted to engage over the outer projecting portions of the base flange 23 of the post. Keepers 26 are provided at diametrically opposite corners of the base portion 12 and are arranged with receiving sockets 27 adapted for the reception of the free ends 28 of the plates 24. When the ost 20 is seated upon the base portion 12 overlying the shank 14:, the plates 24 are moved into locking position with the post base 28 and screws 29 are employed for projecting through keepers 26 into openings 80 of the plate ends 28 and whereby the post is looked upon the base as best illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings.
When desired to transfer the post to another looation, the plates 24- are released by unscrewing the members 29 and whereby the post 20 is readily elevated off of the post 10. The wrench 16 is then employed for unscrewing the auger 15 from the earth 11 and this anchoring means is entirely released. As the auger is of greater diameter than the base opening 13, a continued unscrewing thereof continues to elevate the shank l4: and by bearing against the base portion 12 within the hollow underside 31 thereof, it will be seen that the entire post 10 will be forced from its seating position within the earth 11. The base may be thentransferred to a different place and the' entire device readily reassembled as before, it being also noted that the post is provided with side staples 32 for the reception of and having a central perforation therethrough, an anchoring member journaled through the said perforation and having an auger at its lower end within the said hollow portion, a transverse pin carried by the anchoring member, an encircling spring upon the said anchor member positioned between the said pin and base, a post having a central longitudinal bore adapted for the reception of the said anchoring member and spring when the post is operatively positioned upon the said base, pivoted locking plates carried by the said base and having engaging flanges at opposite sides of the said posts and locking keepers for the free ends of the said plates.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
