IMPROVEMENT IN HANDLES FOR CARRIAGE-DOORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,083, dated August 15, 1871.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD WELLs, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Sprin g-B ack Handle for Carriage-Doors 5 and I do hereby declare that the Jfollowing is a t'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the a-rt to make and use the saine, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing forming part of this specifica-tion, in which- Figure 1 represents an inner tace view ot' a carriage-door provided with iny improved handle. Fig. 2 is a sectional end view of the sanie.

The object of this invention is to prevent the inner handle of a carriage-door from being an obstruction to ladies dresses, 85e., and at the saine time to furnish a powerful lever for opening the lock. The invention consists in concealing the crank of the handle between the body and inner lining of the door, and in providing a nii-ved slot in said lining through which the crank-pin or knob of the handle projects, so that, in fact, but a portion of said knob will project from the inner face of the door. The inconvenience ot' the lon g projecting handle is thus overcome, and still greater power available, as alon ger crank proper may be used concealed than when in sight.

A in the drawing represents the body of the carriage-door. D is the inner covering or lining ofthe same. C is the pin of the lock, by the turning of which the lock-bolt or catch is opened. To the inner end of this pin is, in suitable man ner, applied the crank a of the inner handle, carrying the crank-pin b. For the reception of this crank a there is a recess, c, cut into the face of the body A, as shown in Fig. 2, so that said crank will be concealed between the body and lining. For the pin b a curved slot, c, properly lined with metal or otherwise linished, is cut through the lining and an ornamental or plain head, j', screwed or otherwise fastened to the end oi' the pin b. The said knob will then be all that projects from the face of the door. A suspended lining, D, of fabric maybe applied to the door to cover the knob e and bring it entirely out of sight, as indicated in Fig. 2. The crank c may, in the stated forin, be of suitable length, as it does not injure the appearance of the door by its size, and great leverage may thus be gained, enabling ladies to open the door from the inside.

Having thus described iny invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the crank c b c between the body and inner lining of the door, with its knob f projecting through and working in an are slot formed in. the said lining, said crank operated, also, by the spindle upon the outside, for the purpose specied.
